Literary Context

The logic is forward-looking: God commanded Moses to teach; Israel is to do; outcomes follow. Immediately after this introduction comes the “Hear, Israel” confession and the call to wholehearted love (6:4–5), so 6:1–3 functions as a doorway into the core exhortations that follow.
Historical Context
The scene assumes Israel is on the verge of crossing into Canaan after years of wandering, shifting from a mobile camp to settled life with fields, towns, and new pressures. Moses speaks as the leader delivering God’s instructions to a people who will soon have land to “possess,” and whose identity will be shaped by how they live there. The passage also reflects a household-based transfer of teaching: not only the present audience but children and grandchildren are included. Others read it more directly as personal, near-term benefit for individual obedience (while still within Israel’s corporate story).
What “increase mightily” points to (v.3). Some read it primarily as population growth and stability over generations. Others include broader prosperity or expansion (social strength and flourishing) as part of what “increase” can mean in context.
Why the disagreement exists The passage gives clear cause-and-result language, but it does not spell out the mechanism or timeframe (immediate vs. long-term; individual vs. communal). Also, “fear” is a relational term that can include multiple shades—reverence, loyalty, and caution—without the text choosing only one.
What this passage clearly contributes It sets the purpose of the commands at the start of Deuteronomy 6: Yahweh’s instruction is meant to be taught and practiced as Israel transitions into settled life. It frames covenant obedience as multi-generational, grounded in Israel’s relationship with Yahweh, and connected to life and flourishing in the promised land (vv.1–3).
