Set apart and claimed by Yahweh Moses states Israel’s status: they are “holy” for Yahweh, meaning marked off for him rather than ordinary among the nations. He says Yahweh has “chosen” them and calls them his “own possession,” describing a special belonging. The line “above all peoples” presents Israel as having a unique relationship and role among the nations on earth.
A rejected explanation—size did not earn this Moses denies that Yahweh’s love or choice was driven by Israel’s population strength. He emphasizes the opposite: Israel was “the fewest,” so their status cannot be credited to being impressive or powerful.
Two stated reasons and the historical proof Moses gives the positive reasons: Yahweh loves Israel, and Yahweh intends to keep the oath sworn to their fathers. He then points to an observable outcome of that love and oath-keeping: Yahweh brought Israel out of Egypt with “a mighty hand,” and “redeemed” them from slavery and from Pharaoh’s control. The Exodus is presented as the concrete demonstration of Yahweh’s commitment.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside Moses’ call for Israel’s exclusive loyalty as they prepare to enter the land. Just before, Moses warns against mixing with the peoples of Canaan and their worship practices (7:1–5), and then he grounds that warning in Israel’s distinct relationship to Yahweh (7:6–11). The logic moves from identity (“you are holy… chosen… his possession”) to a rejected basis (“not because you were more numerous”), to stated motives (“because Yahweh loves… and keeps the oath”), ending with a reminder of the Exodus as proof of that commitment.
Historical Context
The speech assumes Israel is on the edge of settling in Canaan after leaving Egypt and traveling through the wilderness. Israel is portrayed as a small people group among larger established populations, which would make assimilation and fear real pressures. The passage looks back to a defining public event—release from slavery under the Egyptian king—and treats it as a lived national memory that explains Israel’s present status. It also assumes Israel’s story includes earlier ancestors who received binding promises, tying the current generation to a longer family and tribal past.
Theological Significance
These verses root Israel’s identity in Yahweh’s decision, not Israel’s size or strength. The text explicitly says Israel is “holy” (set apart for Yahweh), “chosen,” and Yahweh’s “own possession” (v.6). It also explicitly rejects a common human explanation: Israel was not loved or chosen because it was numerous; in fact it was “the fewest” (v.7).

One question is what “above all peoples on the face of the earth” means (v.6). Some read it mainly as special status or closeness to Yahweh. Others read it mainly as a special role or task among the nations (a calling with responsibilities), without implying that other peoples lack value.
Another question is how to hear “holy people” (v.6). Some emphasize social separation (distinct community boundaries in worship and life). Others emphasize moral purpose (belonging that should shape conduct), while still recognizing the immediate context includes separation from Canaanite worship.
The wording “above all peoples” can sound like ranking, but the immediate argument focuses on belonging and on the lack of human reasons for choosing (not size). Also, “holy” can mean “set apart” in a relational sense, yet it often carries moral implications elsewhere in Deuteronomy; readers weigh these associations differently.
The text clearly contributes a theology of divine initiative: Israel’s covenant identity is grounded in Yahweh’s love and prior promise, not in Israel’s impressive qualities (vv.7–8). It also connects that love and promise to public history: redemption from Egypt is presented as a real-world demonstration of Yahweh’s commitment (v.8), not merely an internal feeling or private experience.
