Question 1

What identity statements are made about Israel in verse 6, and how do they relate to each other?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 stacks several identity claims: Israel is a “holy people” to Yahweh (set apart as belonging to him), Yahweh “has chosen” them, and they are “a people for his own possession.” These lines overlap: “holy” describes their set-apart status; “chosen” explains that this status came from Yahweh’s decision; “own possession” pictures a special belonging relationship. The phrase “above all peoples… on the face of the earth” adds that this relationship is unique among the nations, whatever else it may imply about purpose or status.

Question 2

What explanation does verse 7 explicitly reject for Yahweh’s love and choice?

Accepted Answer

Verse 7 explicitly denies that Yahweh’s love or choice was based on Israel’s numbers. It names the rejected basis twice (“didn’t set his love… nor choose you, because you were more in number”), and then reinforces it with the opposite fact: Israel was “the fewest of all peoples.” In the passage’s logic, this undercuts any attempt to explain Israel’s chosenness as something Israel earned through obvious strength, influence, or demographic advantage. The choice is presented as not driven by human impressiveness.

Question 3

According to verse 8, what two reasons are given for Yahweh’s action, and how are they connected?

Accepted Answer

Verse 8 gives two stated reasons: “because Yahweh loves you” and “because he would keep the oath… to your fathers.” The text links love and promise rather than separating them. Love explains Yahweh’s favorable commitment to Israel, while the oath ties that commitment to earlier sworn promises made to Israel’s ancestors, binding the present generation to a longer story. The verse then points to a specific action—the Exodus rescue—as the outcome of these reasons, showing love and oath-keeping expressed through deliverance.

Question 4

How does the Exodus function as evidence in verse 8? What does it prove in the argument?

Accepted Answer

In verse 8 the Exodus is not introduced as background trivia but as proof. Yahweh “brought you out with a mighty hand” and “redeemed you out of the house of bondage… from the hand of Pharaoh.” That historical rescue is presented as the visible, public demonstration that Yahweh truly loves Israel and is truly committed to the sworn promise to the ancestors. In the flow of the argument, the Exodus shows that Israel’s identity (chosen/possessed) is anchored in Yahweh’s prior action, not Israel’s achievements.

Question 5

What does the language of “redeemed… out of the house of bondage” emphasize in this context?

Accepted Answer

The word-picture emphasizes release from control and conditions of slavery. Israel is said to be brought out of the “house of bondage” and out of Pharaoh’s “hand,” which highlights both the oppressive situation and the power that held them. In context, “redeemed” supports the claim that Yahweh’s love and oath-keeping are not abstract ideas: they resulted in liberation from a real ruler and a real system of forced labor. The focus is on rescue and transfer of allegiance—from Pharaoh’s control to belonging to Yahweh.

Question 6

How do verses 6–8 support the surrounding call for exclusive loyalty in Deuteronomy 7:1–11?

Accepted Answer

The surrounding section warns Israel not to merge with Canaanite peoples and worship (7:1–5), then grounds that warning in who Israel is to Yahweh (7:6–11). Verses 6–8 provide the identity basis: Israel belongs uniquely to Yahweh as his chosen possession, and that relationship began with Yahweh’s love and promise rather than Israel’s strength. The Exodus reminder reinforces that Yahweh has already acted decisively to claim Israel. The logic is: distinct belonging and prior rescue explain why rival loyalties are incompatible.
