Question 1

What specific activities does the passage call “good and proper,” and how are they connected to work?

Accepted Answer

The passage names three ordinary activities—eating, drinking, and “enjoying good”—and ties them directly to labor. Enjoyment is not described as detached leisure but as receiving the good that comes from what a person “labors under the sun.” The framing suggests a whole-life pattern: daily provision (eating and drinking) plus a positive experience of the results of work. The enjoyment is not said to erase toil; rather, it is pictured as something that can accompany toil and its outcomes within the normal course of life.

Question 2

How does the text describe the limits placed around enjoyment in v.18?

Accepted Answer

The limits are expressed in time and in gift-language. Time: the enjoyment is located “all the days of his life,” which is implicitly finite and is described as the span “which God has given him.” Gift-language: it is “his portion,” meaning an allotted share rather than an open-ended claim. These boundaries fit the surrounding context that emphasizes life’s uncertainties. The verse does not deny enjoyment; it places it inside a life that is brief, assigned, and not fully controllable.

Question 3

In v.19, what two things are said to come from God, and why does the passage separate them?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 says God gives (1) “riches and wealth” and also (2) “power to eat of it,” along with taking one’s portion and rejoicing in labor. The separation highlights that having resources and enjoying them are not identical. A person may possess wealth yet lack the capacity, opportunity, health, or inner freedom to enjoy it. By calling the ability to enjoy “the gift of God,” the text treats enjoyment as something received, not something automatically produced by accumulation or control.

Question 4

What does “portion” mean in the flow of these verses, and what does it not mean?

Accepted Answer

In this passage, “portion” functions as the share of life and its goods that a person receives within God-given limits. It connects v.18 and v.19: enjoying daily provision and the good from labor is “his portion,” and taking that portion accompanies rejoicing in work. It does not mean that everything desired is guaranteed, nor does it imply that wealth itself is the goal. Instead, it frames enjoyment as appropriate to what one has been allotted, rather than as an endless pursuit of more.

Question 5

What outcome for a person’s inner life is described in v.20, and what reason is given for it?

Accepted Answer

The outcome is that the person “shall not often reflect on the days of his life.” In context, this points to reduced brooding or fixation on life’s passing nature. The given reason is not that the days stop being limited, but that “God occupies him with the joy of his heart.” The verse links mental posture to God-given joy: joy engages the person’s attention and emotional life so that constant rumination about time, loss, or brevity becomes less frequent.

Question 6

How do vv.18–20 relate to the earlier warnings about wealth in Ecclesiastes 5:8–17 (as a conclusion or alternative)?

Accepted Answer

These verses function like a concluding alternative after describing what goes wrong with wealth—instability, loss, and frustration. Instead of recommending hoarding or total despair, the speaker offers what he has “seen” to be fitting: receive daily enjoyment from work as a portion. The logic is that since wealth cannot secure lasting control or satisfaction, the realistic good is to enjoy the goods of life as they come, when God grants both resources and the capacity to enjoy them.

Question 7

What does the passage explicitly attribute to God, and what remains simply observed about human experience?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly attributed to God are the giving of one’s days (v.18), the giving of riches and wealth (v.19), the giving of the ability to enjoy and rejoice (v.19), and the way joy occupies a person’s heart (v.20). Observed about human experience is the speaker’s conclusion that eating, drinking, and enjoying labor’s good is fitting, and that such enjoyment reduces frequent reflection on life’s days. The text mixes observation (“I have seen”) with repeated claims that God is the ultimate giver behind both life and enjoyment.
