The resulting mental posture The final verse describes an outcome: such a person will not often brood over “the days of his life.” The reason is that God keeps him engaged with heartfelt joy. The picture is not of ignorance of life’s limits, but of a life so occupied with present enjoyment that constant rumination on life’s brevity is reduced.

Ecclesiastes 5:18–20 presents the speaker’s observed conclusion about what is “good and proper” in ordinary human life: eating, drinking, and enjoying the good that comes from one’s work, within the limited span of days God gives. The text treats this enjoyment not as limitless achievement but as a “portion” (an allotted share).

The passage also draws a clear distinction between possessing wealth and being able to enjoy it. Riches may be present, yet the “power to eat of it,” to accept one’s portion, and to rejoice in labor is separately described as “the gift of God” (v.19). Finally, this received joy affects a person’s inner life: it reduces frequent brooding over the passing days (v.20).

Where interpretation differs (only where needed)

1. What “portion” implies. Some read “portion” mainly as a call to accept limits: enjoyment is real but bounded, and it resists the endless drive for more. Others read it more neutrally as rightful enjoyment: what one has is legitimately to be enjoyed without shame, even if it is substantial.

2. What “power to eat of it” refers to. Some take it primarily as outward opportunity (having access, circumstances, time). Others emphasize inward capacity (health, emotional ability to enjoy, freedom from anxiety). Many readers treat it as including both.

3. Whether “not often reflect” is entirely positive. Some interpret v.20 as relief from anxious rumination: joy keeps a person from constant fixation on life’s brevity. Others hear a mild caution: joy can keep someone so occupied that they avoid serious reflection. The verse itself presents the effect as the result of God-given joy, but it does not explicitly weigh every possible downside.

Why the disagreement exists Key phrases can be read in more than one direction without breaking the grammar: “portion” can signal either acceptance of limits or simple entitlement to enjoy; “power” can describe either circumstances or inner capacity; and “not often reflect” can be heard as healthy release from worry or as reduced contemplation. The surrounding context (warnings about wealth’s futility in 5:8–17) pushes many readers toward the “limits and contentment” sense, but the wording also accommodates a more general statement about enjoyment.
