Question 1

In verse 1, what two comparisons are made, and what do they assume about what lasts?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 makes two “better than” comparisons: a good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death is better than the day of birth. Perfume suggests something pleasant, costly, and socially impressive, yet it fades quickly. A “good name” implies a reputation that outlasts the moment and continues to matter after the immediate enjoyment is gone. The second comparison assumes that birth begins a story but does not yet reveal its full meaning, while death marks an endpoint that forces a clearer evaluation of what a life became.

Question 2

In verse 2, what is the stated reason the house of mourning is “better” than the house of feasting?

Accepted Answer

The text gives a direct reason: the house of mourning highlights “the end of all men,” and “the living should take this to heart.” Mourning is not praised mainly for its emotional experience but for what it displays—human limits and the certainty of death. Feasting, by contrast, can be an environment where that reality is easily ignored. The verse frames the advantage of mourning as clarity: it brings a truth everyone shares into view, and it can shape the inner life of those who are still alive.

Question 3

How do verses 3–4 connect “face,” “heart,” and the locations of mourning and mirth?

Accepted Answer

Verses 3–4 link outward expression (“sadness of the face”) with inner outcome (“the heart is made good”). The point is that visible sorrow can accompany a constructive internal change. Verse 4 then describes where different kinds of people keep their “heart” (their attention and orientation): the wise keep it in the house of mourning, while fools keep it in the house of mirth. Together, the verses portray mourning as a place that trains the inner self toward seriousness, while constant amusement can train avoidance and shallow thinking.

Question 4

What contrast is made in verse 5, and how does it fit the rest of the passage’s “better than” logic?

Accepted Answer

Verse 5 contrasts hearing “the rebuke of the wise” with hearing “the song of fools,” and again calls the first “better.” Rebuke is unpleasant but can correct and clarify; fools’ songs are pleasant but may distract or mislead. This fits the passage’s overall logic: what feels good in the moment (perfume, feasting, laughter, songs) is not automatically the most valuable. What confronts reality (mourning, rebuke, thinking about death) may produce deeper benefit, especially in shaping the heart toward steadiness and truth.

Question 5

What does the image in verse 6 (thorns crackling under a pot) communicate about foolish laughter?

Accepted Answer

The comparison highlights sound, speed, and limited usefulness. Thorns burning under a pot can flare up with a lot of crackling noise but burn out quickly, offering a brief burst rather than steady heat. In the same way, “the laughter of the fool” is portrayed as loud and lively but short-lived and lacking substance. The verse concludes, “This also is vanity,” reinforcing that this kind of laughter is insubstantial—impressive in the moment but ultimately empty or disappointing when measured by lasting value.

Question 6

Across verses 1–6, what seems to be the passage’s definition of “wise” versus “fool” behavior?

Accepted Answer

Wisdom here is not presented as constant sadness but as a willingness to face what is true and lasting. The wise person keeps the “heart” oriented toward settings that teach reality: mourning and rebuke. The fool is characterized by preference for mirth, songs, and laughter—especially when those become ways to avoid seriousness. The repeated “better than” statements suggest that wisdom chooses what yields clarity and durable inner good, while folly chooses what is immediately pleasant but quickly fades and ends in “vanity.”
