Question 1

What troubling reality does v. 12 describe, and how strongly does it state it?

Accepted Answer

Verse 12 describes a scenario where someone commits wrongdoing many times (“a hundred times,” meaning repeatedly) and still “lives long.” The point is not the exact number but the surprising combination: persistent evil plus continued life. The statement is frank and unromantic—there is no attempt to deny the data of experience. This sets the stage for the speaker’s next move: a confident claim about outcomes that does not depend on immediate consequences. The verse therefore functions as a realistic premise before the conclusion about what is ultimately “better.”

Question 2

What does the speaker say he is sure about in v. 12, and how does he describe the people in view?

Accepted Answer

Even after acknowledging that wrongdoers may live long, the speaker says he is sure it will be “better” for those who fear God. He does not define them by achievements or by avoiding all hardship, but by their stance toward God: they “fear God” and are “reverent before him.” The phrase “before him” highlights genuineness—this is not only public appearance but life lived with God in view. The speaker’s certainty is presented as a settled conviction, not as something inferred from quick results.

Question 3

How does v. 13 contrast the wicked with those who fear God, and what reason does it give?

Accepted Answer

Verse 13 states the opposite outcome for the wicked: “it shall not be well” with them. It also adds an explanation: “because he doesn’t fear God.” So the contrast is moral and relational, not merely circumstantial. The verse further says the wicked person will not “lengthen days like a shadow.” That image suggests a life that is insubstantial or quickly passing, even if it appears extended. The reason given is simple and direct: the decisive difference is the absence of reverence toward God.

Question 4

How can v. 12 (“lives long”) and v. 13 (“neither shall he lengthen days”) be read together without ignoring either line?

Accepted Answer

The passage itself creates tension: it admits long life for a persistent wrongdoer, then says the wicked will not lengthen days. One way to read them together is to treat v. 12 as reporting what can happen in plain view—justice can be delayed—while v. 13 speaks about what is finally true about the wicked person’s “days,” using “shadow” language to qualify the value or stability of that life. Another way is to see v. 13 as a general principle stated strongly, with v. 12 already acknowledging exceptions. Either way, the text holds both observation and conviction side by side.

Question 5

What does the “shadow” comparison add to the claim about the wicked in v. 13?

Accepted Answer

Calling the wicked person’s days “like a shadow” adds a qualitative picture, not just a statistic about lifespan. A shadow is real but fleeting, thin, and dependent on something else. In context, it suggests that whatever “length” the wicked seem to have lacks solidity—easily fading, hard to hold, and not lasting in the way it appears. The comparison supports the claim that things will not ultimately be “well” for the wicked, even when their life story seems to contradict that for a time.

Question 6

In these verses, what is stated as the key divider between two outcomes: behavior count, social outcomes, or fear of God?

Accepted Answer

The text mentions behavior (“commits crimes…a hundred times”) and a social-looking outcome (“lives long”), but it does not present those as the decisive divider. Instead, it identifies “fear of God” as the key distinction. Those who fear God are described as reverent “before him,” and the wicked are defined by the absence of that fear. The “better/not well” contrast is attached directly to that stance toward God. So while actions and visible outcomes are in view, the passage frames the underlying issue as reverence versus irreverence toward God.
