Question 1

What repeated claim is made about wisdom in verses 16 and 18, and what comparisons are used?

Accepted Answer

Verses 16 and 18 repeat the same core evaluation: wisdom is “better.” In v. 16 it is said to be better than “strength,” and in v. 18 it is said to be better than “weapons of war.” The comparisons move from general human ability (“strength”) to a specific public arena where strength matters (military power). The repetition makes the speaker’s assessment emphatic: wisdom has a higher practical value than force. This is presented as the speaker’s conclusion (“Then said I…”), not as a guess or a mere wish.

Question 2

According to verse 16, what can cause wisdom to be ignored even when it is truly wise?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 states that a “poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.” The passage connects the rejection of wisdom to the social position of the wise person (“poor”), not to the quality of the insight itself. The text implies a mismatch between value and reception: wisdom can be present and effective, yet still discounted because the speaker lacks status and credibility in the community. The emphasis is on how social ranking shapes whose words carry weight, even when those words are wise.

Question 3

In verse 17, what two kinds of speech are contrasted, and what evaluation is given?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 contrasts “the words of the wise” with “the cry of him who rules among fools.” The wise words are described as being “heard in quiet,” while the other speech is a “cry,” suggesting loud, forceful, or attention-grabbing speech. The evaluation is explicit: the wise words (quietly heard) are “better” than the ruler’s cry. The contrast is not simply between quiet and loud, but between wise counsel and noisy authority operating in a foolish environment.

Question 4

What does the phrase “rules among fools” add to the comparison in verse 17?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “rules among fools” suggests that the loud “cry” comes from a leadership setting shaped by foolishness. It may imply that the ruler is foolish, that the people around him are foolish, or that the overall environment rewards foolish leadership. In any case, it strengthens the contrast with wise words: the passage is not merely comparing speaking styles but comparing the quality of leadership and the kind of community that gives leadership its platform. It highlights that authority and wisdom do not always align.

Question 5

How does verse 18 qualify the earlier praise of wisdom, and what tension does it create?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 again praises wisdom as better than “weapons of war,” but then adds, “one sinner destroys much good.” This qualifies the praise by pointing to fragility: even when wisdom produces “much good,” the result can be undone by a single wrongdoer. The tension is that wisdom is superior and can achieve great outcomes, yet those outcomes may not be secure or lasting. The verse pushes the reader to hold both ideas together: wisdom’s excellence and the vulnerability of good in a world where harmful actions occur.

Question 6

Across verses 16–18, what obstacles to wisdom’s influence are named or implied?

Accepted Answer

Three obstacles appear. First, social status can block influence: the “poor man’s wisdom is despised” and his words “not heard” (v. 16). Second, noisy authority can drown out better counsel: the “cry” of a ruler among fools competes with and can overshadow wise words (v. 17). Third, even when wisdom succeeds, outcomes can be reversed: “one sinner destroys much good” (v. 18). Together these show that wisdom’s value does not guarantee social recognition, effective transmission, or durable results.
