Grace explained, boasting excluded, works framed

These verses summarize and tighten the argument that runs from the audience’s former state (2:1–3) to the divine intervention that changes their condition (2:4–7). Verses 8–9 restate the central claim and explicitly rule out boasting; verse 10 immediately adds a purpose statement so the paragraph’s logic moves from reception to a new manner of life.

Ephesians fits the setting of early imperial Roman cities where households, patronage, and public honor shaped social relationships. Mixed-background assemblies met in homes and heard letters read aloud, so language about gifts, boasting, and daily “walking” would intersect with common status competition and expectations of reciprocity.

Theological significance

Salvation is God's gift of grace received through faith, so no person or group can claim it as an achievement or ground for boasting. Yet Paul does not oppose grace to a transformed life. Those saved in Christ are God's workmanship, newly created for good works that God prepared as their way of life. Works are excluded as the basis of salvation and restored as its intended fruit. The passage therefore resists both self-salvation and antinomianism: grace gives life, removes boasting, and forms a people whose conduct displays God's creative purpose in Christ.
