3:18Meaning
Strength for shared grasping Paul asks that they would have enough strength to “comprehend” the reality he is about to describe. This grasping is not private or elite; it is “with all the saints,” meaning within the whole holy community. What they are to grasp is pictured as having “breadth and length and height and depth,” stressing immensity from every angle.
Unit 2 (v. 19a): Knowing what surpasses knowing
He then adds a second request: that they would “know” Christ’s love even though it “surpasses knowledge.” The point is not contradiction for its own sake; it presses beyond ordinary learning into a lived, experienced recognition. The love is presented as both real and approachable, yet greater than what human understanding can fully contain.
Unit 3 (v. 19b): The purpose—being filled toward God’s fullness
The requested result is that they “may be filled to all the fullness of God.” The prayer aims at their whole life being brought to completeness in relation to God, not simply gaining new ideas. The wording suggests a movement toward fullness that comes from God, shaping the community’s inner life and shared identity.
