Question 1

What details in verses 10–11 show the summons was official rather than casual?

Accepted Answer

The narrative emphasizes formalities: the timing (“seventh day”), the king’s state (“merry with wine”), and the use of intermediaries rather than a private request. Seven attendants are named, and they are described as men who “ministered in the presence” of the king, suggesting court rank and direct access. The command is delivered through this recognized group, and the target is identified with full title (“Vashti the queen”). These elements frame the message as a royal order moving through established palace channels, not an informal invitation.

Question 2

According to verse 11, what reason does the king give for summoning Vashti?

Accepted Answer

The stated reason is public display: the attendants are told to bring Vashti “with the royal crown” so the king can show “the peoples and the princes” her beauty. The verse adds an explanatory note—“for she was beautiful to look on”—which reinforces that her appearance is central to the king’s intent. Whatever additional motives may be guessed, the text makes the overt purpose clear: her beauty is to be presented before a large, elite audience at the king’s initiative.

Question 3

How does the passage describe the audience, and why does that matter for understanding the scene?

Accepted Answer

The audience is described broadly (“peoples”) and specifically (“princes”). That combination suggests the gathering includes multiple groups within the empire and its leadership class, not merely a small circle of friends. This matters because the summons and refusal happen against a backdrop of public visibility and political theater. A queen’s appearance becomes part of how the king presents his status, and a refusal is not just interpersonal; it can be perceived as happening in front of the very people whose loyalty and respect the banquet is designed to reinforce.

Question 4

What does verse 12 emphasize about how Vashti’s refusal is communicated and received?

Accepted Answer

Verse 12 highlights that the refusal is in response to “the king’s commandment” delivered “by the chamberlains” (the attendants). That keeps the focus on authority and procedure: she is not declining a personal request but rejecting an order transmitted through official servants. The verse then emphasizes the king’s reaction in intensified language: he becomes “very angry,” and his anger “burned in him.” The narrator presents an immediate emotional reversal—from festive mood to inner rage—signaling a crisis.

Question 5

What is the narrative effect of mentioning the king’s wine at the start of this unit?

Accepted Answer

The wine detail frames the king’s decision-making context before the command is issued. It suggests lowered restraint and a more impulsive mood, which fits the shift from planned royal display to a risky, personally driven order. The text does not say the wine excuses him; it simply links his “merry” state with the initiation of the summons. Narratively, it also sharpens the contrast with verse 12: the same scene that began in carefree festivity ends in burning anger, setting up the conflict that follows.

Question 6

What does the text explicitly state, and what does it leave unstated, about “with the royal crown”?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the command includes a specific detail: Vashti is to come “with the crown royal.” The text does not explain whether this means she should come fully dressed in royal clothing with her crown as part of formal regalia, or whether the crown is singled out to imply something more provocative or humiliating. Because the narrator’s stated purpose is to display her beauty, readers may suspect an objectifying intent, but the exact dress expectation is not spelled out in these verses.

Question 7

How do verses 10–12 set up the next part of the story without narrating it yet?

Accepted Answer

This unit ends with unresolved tension: a direct royal command has been refused, and the king’s anger is inflamed. That combination naturally raises questions the text does not answer here: What are the consequences? How will the court respond? What will happen to Vashti’s status? By stopping at the moment of anger, the narrator turns a domestic moment into a political problem that demands a public resolution. It functions as a hinge between the banquet’s display of power and the coming legal-court response.
