Question 1

What two main subjects does Esther 10:2 say are recorded in the royal chronicles?

Accepted Answer

The verse points to two broad subjects. First are “all the acts” of the king’s “power and … might,” meaning the king’s significant achievements and demonstrations of authority (without listing them). Second is “the full account of the greatness of Mordecai,” focusing on Mordecai’s elevated status and significance at court. By pairing these, the verse treats Mordecai’s rise as notable at an imperial level, not just within the Jewish community or the inner story line of Esther.

Question 2

How does Esther 10:2 describe the cause or source of Mordecai’s “greatness”?

Accepted Answer

Mordecai’s greatness is explicitly linked to the king’s action: it is the greatness “whereunto the king advanced him.” The verse does not present Mordecai’s status as self-made, accidental, or merely popular acclaim. It frames his rise as an official promotion that came through royal decision. That connection matters for the epilogue’s tone: Mordecai’s position is portrayed as recognized by the state and inseparable from the king’s exercise of authority in appointing and elevating officials.

Question 3

What does the rhetorical question at the end of the verse (“aren’t they written…?”) do for the ending of the book?

Accepted Answer

The rhetorical question functions like a closing pointer rather than a continuation of the plot. It signals that the story is ending while implying that more detail exists elsewhere. It also claims that the book’s final summary aligns with what the empire itself recorded. Instead of quoting documents, the verse uses the idea of royal annals to give a sense of public confirmation and scale: these events fit the kind of things governments preserve—royal achievements and major appointments.

Question 4

What is meant by “the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia” in the flow of the verse?

Accepted Answer

In the verse, “the book of the chronicles” refers to official court records associated with the ruling line “of Media and Persia.” In context, it is the place where one would expect to find written summaries of royal deeds and noteworthy promotions. The phrase doesn’t explain the archive’s exact form, but it clearly communicates a setting where state actions were documented. The mention of “Media and Persia” links the records to the broader imperial identity and its succession of rulers, not only to one moment in the story.

Question 5

How should “full account” be understood in Esther 10:2, based on what the verse does and does not provide?

Accepted Answer

The verse asserts that there is a “full account” of Mordecai’s greatness, but it does not supply that account inside the book of Esther. So “full” at minimum means that the author presents a fuller record as existing in official chronicles. Whether it means absolutely complete detail or simply a comprehensive report by ancient historical standards is not specified. What is clear is the narrative effect: the author is closing by acknowledging limits and pointing beyond the story to an established source of state-recorded detail.

Question 6

Why might the verse pair the king’s “power and might” with Mordecai’s advancement in the same sentence?

Accepted Answer

The pairing suggests that Mordecai’s promotion is being framed as part of the king’s notable acts—something that belongs in the public record alongside the king’s displays of authority. It reinforces that Mordecai’s rise is not an isolated personal outcome but tied to imperial governance and royal policy. In the epilogue, that pairing also connects the Jewish deliverance story to the wider political world: what happened affected the administration of the empire and was memorable within its own categories of significance.

Question 7

What explicit claims does Esther 10:2 make, and what important details does it leave unstated?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the verse claims: (1) the king performed many acts demonstrating power and might; (2) there is a full report of Mordecai’s greatness; (3) the king advanced Mordecai; and (4) these matters are written in royal chronicles linked with Media and Persia. It leaves unstated: which specific deeds of the king are meant, what the “full account” includes, the precise title or location of the chronicles, and whether the author expects readers to consult them. The verse works more as a closing reference than as a sourced quotation.
