The scheduled turn after a year-long preparation Each young woman had a specific “turn” to go to King Ahasuerus. That turn only came after she completed what the text calls the established rule for women: twelve months of preparation. The year is divided into two phases—six months using oil of myrrh and six months using fragrances and other cleansing preparations—so the process is both lengthy and standardized.
Allowed to choose what to bring When it was time to go to the king, the young woman was permitted to take whatever she wanted from the women’s house to the king’s house. The focus is not on what she must bring, but on what she may request, implying that presentation could vary by personal preference within the limits of the palace supply.
One evening with the king, then reassignment She went to the king in the evening and returned the next day, not to the same place, but to a “second house of the women.” This return is supervised by Shaashgaz, a royal officer responsible for the concubines. Literary Context
These verses sit inside the larger account of how the Persian court replaces Queen Vashti by gathering many young women into the palace system (Esther 2:1–18).
