Historical Context
The setting is the Persian royal court at Susa during the reign of Ahasuerus (commonly identified with Xerxes I). The “king’s gate” was more than an entryway; it functioned as a public-facing administrative area where officials, messengers, and legal business could be handled, and where those with court duties might be found. Royal harems and the collection of young women reflect court practices of the time, where the king’s household was managed as a state institution. Diaspora minorities could hold positions within imperial systems while still navigating ethnic identity pressures and court politics.
Theological Significance
Esther 2:19–20 briefly links two ongoing realities in the palace: court life continues to manage the king’s women (“gathered… the second time”), and Mordecai is regularly present at the king’s gate.
