Question 1

What signs in verses 15–16 show that Esther has taken the lead in the plan?

Accepted Answer

The text signals a change in who is directing events. In v. 15 Esther sends a message back rather than remaining silent or only receiving instructions. In v. 16 her words are mostly imperatives: “Go,” “gather,” and “fast.” She sets the terms (who, where, how, and how long), and she links the fast to her next action (“and so will I go in to the king”). Even Mordecai’s role is framed as carrying out her orders, which is confirmed when v. 17 emphasizes that he did “according to all” she commanded.

Question 2

What exactly does Esther ask the Jews in Susa to do, and how is the fast described?

Accepted Answer

Esther instructs Mordecai to gather “all the Jews who are present in Shushan/Susa” and to fast “for me.” The fast is described with strong, comprehensive language: “neither eat nor drink” and lasting “three days, night or day.” The details emphasize intensity (no food or water) and sustained duration. The wording also highlights unity: the fast is not a private act by Esther alone but something the community does together on her behalf as she prepares to take a dangerous step at court.

Question 3

How does Esther connect the community’s fasting with her own actions inside the palace?

Accepted Answer

Esther explicitly links the public fast in Susa with her own fast in the palace: “I also and my maidens will fast in like manner.” That parallel suggests shared participation across social locations—both the Jewish community outside and Esther’s household inside the royal environment. She then ties the fasting to timing and decision: “and so will I go in to the king.” In the passage, fasting is not presented as an end in itself but as preparation for a specific act that follows immediately afterward.

Question 4

What does Esther mean when she says she will go to the king “not according to the law”?

Accepted Answer

The passage itself doesn’t quote the law, but it clearly treats Esther’s planned approach as a violation of established rules. In the Persian court setting described in the broader story, approaching the king without being summoned could be seen as unlawful or threatening and could bring severe punishment. Esther’s phrase therefore underscores that her plan is not merely awkward or risky; it is a deliberate crossing of a boundary enforced by the state. That frames her next words about perishing as a realistic consequence, not melodrama.

Question 5

What does the line “and if I perish, I perish” communicate in context?

Accepted Answer

In context, the line is a statement of resolve after naming the danger. Esther has already acknowledged that going in unsummoned is against the law and can lead to death. By adding “if I perish, I perish,” she accepts that possibility as part of the cost of acting. It functions as a turning point from fear to commitment: she is not claiming certainty about survival, and she is not describing the outcome as fate in a detached way. She is choosing to proceed despite the known risk.

Question 6

What role does Mordecai play in verse 17, and why might the narrator end the exchange this way?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 reduces Mordecai’s role to swift execution of Esther’s instructions: he “went his way” and did “according to all that Esther had commanded him.” After earlier persuasion and argument in the chapter, the narrator ends this unit with compliance and action. The effect is to show the plan moving from words to coordinated steps: the community is mobilized, Esther is committed, and Mordecai implements the preparation immediately. The brevity also keeps attention on the impending risk at court rather than on further discussion.

Question 7

What does the passage explicitly claim, and what might readers infer beyond what is directly stated?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the text claims that Esther sends a message, commands a gathering and a fast, specifies strict fasting terms for three days and nights, joins in the fast with her attendants, and plans to approach the king in a way that violates the law. It also explicitly records her acceptance of potential death and Mordecai’s obedience. Readers often infer additional things—such as that the fast includes prayer, or that God will intervene—but those elements are not stated in these verses. The passage itself focuses on communal preparation and personal resolve in a dangerous political setting.
