4:15Meaning
Esther sends her answer Esther does not respond to Mordecai directly in person; she sends a message back through intermediaries. The verse signals a shift: Esther now takes initiative by giving instructions rather than only receiving information.
Unit 2 (v. 16a): A citywide fast on Esther’s behalf
Esther commands Mordecai to gather “all the Jews” present in Susa and to fast “for me.” The fast is described in strict terms: no eating and no drinking, lasting three days and nights. The emphasis is on unity (“all”) and intensity (including water).
Unit 3 (v. 16b): Esther’s own participation and risky approach
Esther adds that she and her maids will fast in the same way, aligning the palace household with the wider Jewish community. After the fast she will go in to the king, explicitly acknowledging this is “not according to the law,” meaning it violates established court procedure. She names the likely outcome—death—and accepts it in the terse resolve: “and if I perish, I perish.”
