She directs Mordecai rather than being directed by him, and she frames the crisis as something the whole Jewish community in Susa must carry together (gathering and fasting). The text explicitly presents fasting as united, intense preparation “for me,” and it pairs that communal action with Esther’s personal decision to enter the king’s presence even though it violates court rules.

The passage also highlights cost and agency at the same time. Esther does not deny danger; she names it. Her final line (“if I perish, I perish”) is an explicit acceptance of risk, not a prediction of the outcome. Mordecai’s immediate obedience closes the scene with coordinated action rather than continued argument.

Where interpretation differs

Several details invite different readings without changing the main point.

1. How literal the timing is. Some take “three days, night or day” as a strict 72-hour fast. Others read it as common speech for a fast spanning parts of three days, focusing on the seriousness rather than the stopwatch.

2. How to understand the “law.” Many read it as Persian court protocol about approaching the king unsummoned. Others think it could include broader palace regulations, but the immediate context fits access-to-the-king rules.

3. How wide “all the Jews” is. Some read it as every Jewish person in Susa participating if possible. Others think it means a full communal mobilization led by representatives, since total participation may be difficult to arrange.

Why the disagreement exists

The disagreements come from the passage’s brief, urgent style. It uses absolute-sounding phrases (“all,” “neither eat nor drink,” “three days”) while describing a fast and a plan being organized quickly in a large city and in a royal setting. Readers also bring different assumptions about how Hebrew time expressions and official language work in narrative.

What this passage clearly contributes

This scene contributes a focused picture of endangered people responding with both communal solidarity (a unified fast) and courageous initiative (Esther’s resolved approach to the king). It also contributes to the book’s larger theme that deliverance can move forward through ordinary, risky decisions made within political constraints—even when God is not named directly in the story (compare the wider context of hidden providence in Esther).
