Literary Context
This verse sits in the middle of a fast-moving reversal scene. Just before it, the king asks what should be done for someone the king wants to honor, and Haman answers while assuming he himself is the intended recipient (vv. 6–9). The king’s response in v. 10 flips Haman’s expectation: the plan remains, but the honored man is Mordecai, not Haman. The verse also sets up the next beats where Haman must obey and the honor becomes public and unavoidable, pushing the story toward Haman’s humiliation (vv. 11–12).
