God’s providence is his steady oversight of events, working through ordinary choices, timing, and circumstances to move his purposes forward. In Ruth, what looks like coincidence becomes meaningful guidance, while human responsibility remains real within God’s larger direction.
In context
This theme appears in passages such as Ruth, where the Bible develops it through story, instruction, warning, and promise. In Ruth 1:6–7, Naomi decides to leave Moab and head back toward Judah, and her two daughters-in-law set out with her. The immediate reason given is news Naomi hears: Yahweh has acted on behalf of his people by providing food again. This closing line of the chapter sums up Naomi’s homecoming and frames the story’s next phase. Naomi returns to Judah, and Ruth comes with her, identified plainly as a Moabite and as Naomi’s daughter-in-law. Their movement is traced from Moab back to Bethlehem.
