Question 1

What actions does Ruth 1:22 summarize, and whose actions are included?

Accepted Answer

The verse summarizes the end of the journey narrative by stating that Naomi “returned,” and that Ruth returned “with her.” The focus is on a shared movement rather than two separate stories: Naomi’s return to Judah is the main action, and Ruth is deliberately attached to it as a companion and family member. The wording also repeats “returned,” reinforcing that the chapter’s travel and decision sequence has reached its destination. This summary prepares for the next chapter by closing the travel scene and opening the question of what their arrival will mean in Bethlehem.

Question 2

How does the verse identify Ruth, and why might those identifiers matter for the next scenes?

Accepted Answer

Ruth is identified in two ways: she is “the Moabitess” and she is Naomi’s “daughter-in-law.” The first label keeps her outsider origin in view, suggesting that her presence in Bethlehem may raise social questions or obstacles. The second label ties her to Naomi through a recognized family relationship, explaining why she is present “with her” and signaling loyalty and obligation within kin networks. Together, these identifiers frame Ruth as both connected (family) and vulnerable (foreign), which becomes important when the story turns to seeking food and safety.

Question 3

What locations are named in Ruth 1:22, and what movement do they mark?

Accepted Answer

The verse names Moab and Bethlehem and describes the movement as coming “out of the country of Moab” and arriving in Bethlehem. This clarifies both the origin and destination, not just that they traveled. By repeating Moab even after the journey is complete, the narrator keeps the past location in view as part of the characters’ story—especially Ruth’s. Naming Bethlehem at the end also re-centers the narrative in Naomi’s hometown, where community memory of her past and expectations about her future will shape how the return is received.

Question 4

What is the time marker in the verse, and what does it indicate within an agrarian setting?

Accepted Answer

The time marker is “the beginning of barley harvest.” At a basic level it dates their arrival in the agricultural calendar, likely springtime. In an agrarian town, harvest is when food supply changes and when work opportunities appear in the fields. It also implies the presence of landowners, workers, and people seeking leftover grain. Even without stating outcomes, the verse positions Naomi and Ruth at a moment when immediate needs—especially food—can be addressed through customary practices connected to harvesting and gleaning, setting up the narrative of chapter 2.

Question 5

What role does Ruth 1:22 play in the structure of Ruth 1 and the transition to Ruth 2?

Accepted Answer

Ruth 1:22 works like a closing summary and a hinge. It gathers up the chapter’s key movements—return from Moab, Ruth’s attachment to Naomi, arrival in Bethlehem—and then adds the harvest-time setting that naturally points forward. Ruth 1 has centered on loss, decision, and return; Ruth 2 will center on finding provision and forming new connections in the fields. The verse does not resolve Naomi’s bitterness from 1:19–21, but it places the characters where the next developments can occur.

Question 6

How does the repeated language of “returned” shape the reader’s understanding of this moment?

Accepted Answer

The repetition of “returned” highlights return as the chapter’s dominant theme and gives the arrival interpretive weight beyond mere travel details. At minimum, it emphasizes that the long movement away from Bethlehem has now been reversed. It also draws attention to Ruth’s participation in that return, even though Bethlehem is not originally her home. The verse itself does not explicitly define what “return” means emotionally or spiritually, but the repeated wording invites the reader to watch how “return” will play out in belonging, reception by the community, and access to provision.
