Literary Context
This unit sits inside a larger section where Israel is told how to remember and rehearse the exodus in everyday practice (Exodus 12–13). Chapter 13 has already instructed Israel to set apart the firstborn (13:1–2) and to keep the feast of unleavened bread as an annual marker (13:3–10). Verses 11–13 push the firstborn instruction forward into the settled future: once in the land, the same memory is carried by ongoing household and herd decisions. The passage is preparatory and forward-looking, anticipating questions and routines that will define Israel’s life after leaving Egypt.
Historical Context
The setting assumes Israel has just left Egypt and is being formed into a people with shared practices before reaching their destination. The command looks ahead to an agrarian life in Canaan, where families will raise herds and have ongoing births of both livestock and children. Firstborn animals were economically significant, so “setting apart” or “buying back” would be a real cost and a repeated reminder. Donkeys were common work animals but not presented as an altar animal, so the text addresses how to treat their firstborn within the same dedication pattern.
