The guide becomes a rear guard The “angel of God” who had been going in front of Israel’s camp changes position to behind them. In the same movement, the pillar of cloud that had been in front also relocates to stand behind, implying coordinated guidance and protection.
One cloud, opposite effects, no contact The cloud positions itself between the Egyptian camp and the Israelite camp. It brings cloud-and-darkness on one side while giving light through the night on the other side, and the result is practical: neither side can come near the other for the whole night.
