Question 1

What does the passage explicitly tell us about the parents, and why might that detail matter in the story?

Accepted Answer

The text states that the man is from Levi and he marries a Levite woman (vv. 1–2). It does not yet name them here, but it clearly frames the child’s family within Israel’s tribes. In the larger Exodus narrative, Levites later have a special role connected to Israel’s worship and leadership, so this detail begins locating the child within Israel’s identity. At the same time, in these verses the tribe label mainly functions as simple, grounded background: this is an Israelite family under threat, not an Egyptian household.

Question 2

What sequence of actions does the mother take from v. 2 to v. 3, and what do those actions suggest about risk and intention?

Accepted Answer

First she hides the baby for three months because she sees he is a “fine” child (v. 2). When hiding is no longer possible, she shifts to a new plan: she makes a papyrus basket, waterproofs it with tar and pitch, puts the child inside, and places it among reeds at the riverbank (v. 3). The steps combine exposure (bringing him to the river) with protection (waterproofing and reeds). The passage does not directly state whether she expects someone to find him, but the care taken suggests she is trying to preserve life, not abandon it.

Question 3

What role does the sister play in vv. 4 and 7, and how does the narrative portray her?

Accepted Answer

In v. 4 she positions herself at a distance to see what will happen, indicating intentional monitoring rather than random chance. In v. 7 she initiates contact with Pharaoh’s daughter and proposes a practical solution: finding a Hebrew nurse to care for the baby. The narrative portrays her as alert, courageous, and socially intelligent—able to speak at the right moment and offer a plan that fits Pharaoh’s daughter’s sudden compassion while also keeping the child connected to Hebrew care. Her actions help turn discovery into rescue.

Question 4

How does the text describe Pharaoh’s daughter’s discovery, and what is emphasized about her response?

Accepted Answer

Pharaoh’s daughter comes to bathe at the river while attendants are present (v. 5). She notices the basket among reeds, sends a servant to retrieve it, opens it, and sees a crying baby (vv. 5–6). The story emphasizes both emotion and recognition: she has compassion and says the child is one of the Hebrews’ children (v. 6). The passage does not describe debate or hesitation; it presents her response as immediate. Her compassion is significant because it arises inside the royal household connected to the policy that endangered Hebrew infants.

Question 5

What is the effect of setting the child “by the river’s bank” among reeds, given the wider context of Exodus 1?

Accepted Answer

Earlier, Pharaoh’s command targeted Hebrew baby boys by ordering them thrown into the river (context from Exodus 1:22). In Exodus 2:3–6, the river becomes the setting for a different outcome: the child is placed at the river’s edge in a way meant to keep him from drowning, and he is then found alive. The reeds and the waterproofed basket shift the river from a place of certain death to a place where rescue can occur. The passage does not explicitly comment on irony, but the contrast is built into the setting and the outcome.

Question 6

In vv. 5–7, what small “turning points” move the scene from danger to a new possibility?

Accepted Answer

Several brief actions change everything: Pharaoh’s daughter sees the basket (v. 5), orders it retrieved, and opens it (v. 6). The baby’s crying becomes part of the turning point, prompting compassion rather than rejection (v. 6). Her spoken identification—“one of the Hebrews’ children”—shows she understands the political risk, yet does not end the rescue (v. 6). Then the sister’s timely question offers a socially workable next step: a Hebrew nurse who can care for the child under royal protection (v. 7). Each turn is small but decisive.
