Question 1

How do verses 12–14 distinguish different kinds of killing, and how does that affect the stated outcome?

Accepted Answer

Verses 12–14 start with a broad rule: if someone strikes a man and he dies, the striker is to be put to death (v. 12). The next verse narrows that by introducing an exception for an unintentional death—something not planned or aimed at. In that case, a specific place is appointed for the person to flee (v. 13), implying protection rather than execution. Verse 14 then restates the “no exception” case: if the person planned it (“schemes”) and attacked “presumptuously” to kill, execution still applies, even if the offender grasps the altar.

Question 2

What details in verse 14 signal that the text is talking about premeditated murder rather than a sudden accident?

Accepted Answer

Verse 14 piles up intention language. It describes someone who “schemes,” which portrays planning beforehand rather than a momentary mishap. It also says the attacker comes “presumptuously” on a neighbor “to kill him,” presenting the killing as the goal of the action, not an unintended result. The altar scene strengthens the point: the offender is not treated as someone needing protection from revenge, but as someone trying to evade judgment. The instruction to remove the person from the altar shows the community is to treat calculated killing as a category that sanctuary cannot shield.

Question 3

What does verse 13 claim about God’s role in an unintentional death, and what does it not explicitly claim?

Accepted Answer

Verse 13 claims that some unintentional killings fall under the wording “God allows it to happen.” At minimum, the verse places the event within God’s oversight rather than treating it as random or outside divine notice. At the same time, it does not explicitly explain the mechanics of that “allowing.” It does not spell out whether God directly caused the death, merely permitted it, or simply acknowledges that it occurred under providence. The verse also does not remove human responsibility, since the person still must flee to an appointed place.

Question 4

What is the function of the “appointed place” in verse 13 based on the immediate context?

Accepted Answer

In context, the appointed place functions as protection for someone involved in an unintentional death. Because the surrounding unit deals with killing and the death penalty, the “place where he shall flee” marks a different legal outcome from execution. It implies controlled refuge—safety from immediate retaliation—while still acknowledging that a death occurred and that the community must address it. The passage itself does not describe procedures, duration, or how the case is decided; it only contrasts this refuge with the removal-and-execution response required for planned murder (v. 14).

Question 5

What do verses 15 and 17 have in common, and how do they frame the seriousness of parent-related offenses?

Accepted Answer

Verses 15 and 17 both assign the same stated penalty (“surely be put to death”) to acts directed against one’s father or mother. Verse 15 focuses on physical violence: striking or attacking a parent. Verse 17 addresses speech: cursing a parent. Put together, they treat both bodily assault and a kind of verbal repudiation as major threats to household authority and stability. The text does not discuss lesser penalties or mitigating circumstances here; it presents these as capital-category offenses within this legal list, alongside murder and kidnapping.

Question 6

How does verse 16 define kidnapping, and what two scenarios does it include?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 defines kidnapping as stealing a person and then either selling the person or still having the person under one’s control. The verse names both scenarios: “kidnaps someone and sells him,” and “if he is found in his hand,” meaning the victim is still being held or possessed. By covering both, the rule does not allow a kidnapper to escape liability just because a sale has not yet happened, or because the victim was recovered. The stated outcome is the same in either case: the kidnapper is to be put to death.

Question 7

What overall set of values or protected goods seems to organize this list of capital offenses (vv. 12–17)?

Accepted Answer

The list protects at least three major goods. First is life: deliberate killing is met with execution, while unintentional killing is handled through refuge (vv. 12–14). Second is family order and parental status: both physical attack and cursing of parents are treated as extreme violations (vv. 15, 17). Third is personal freedom: kidnapping—treating a person as property to sell or hold—is singled out for the maximum penalty (v. 16). The altar detail adds a further point: sacred space cannot be used to block justice for planned violence (v. 14).
