Purpose, material, and basic shape The altar’s purpose is stated first: it is “to burn incense on” (not for animal offerings). It must be made from acacia wood. Its size is tightly defined: one cubit by one cubit (a square), and two cubits tall. It includes “horns,” and those horns are not separate attachments; they are made as part of the same piece.
Gold overlay and border The altar is to be covered with pure gold on its top, on its surrounding sides, and on its horns. In addition, it must have a gold molding (a framing edge or border) around it, emphasizing both finish and distinction.
Carrying hardware for transport Two gold rings are to be attached under the molding, placed on two sides. These rings function as holders for poles so the altar can be carried. The poles themselves must be made of acacia wood and also overlaid with gold, matching the altar’s materials and signaling that transport is built into the design.
Literary Context
These verses sit within the larger block of tabernacle instructions given to Moses on the mountain (Exodus 25–31). The writing moves in a practical, step-by-step way: what to make, what it should look like, how it should be transported, and where it should stand. The incense altar instructions come after descriptions of other key furnishings (ark, table, lampstand) and before later directions about incense use and other priestly matters in the same chapter. The focus here is not on ritual timing but on construction and placement.
Historical Context
The scene assumes a mobile sanctuary used by Israel in the wilderness period, with objects designed to be carried and set up repeatedly. Precious materials (gold) and durable woods (acacia) match a setting where items must survive travel yet signal importance within the community’s worship space. The layout described reflects an inner area separated by a veil, with an ark as the central object in the most restricted space. The text presents these instructions as coming through Moses to shape Israel’s communal worship practices and sacred space.
Theological Significance
Exodus 30:1–6 adds one more piece to the tabernacle furnishings: a small altar made only for burning incense (explicit in v.1). It is not presented as a second “burnt offering” altar. The text stresses careful craftsmanship—acacia wood, precise measurements, and heavy use of gold (vv.1–3).

Exact placement in the tent and its significance The altar is to be set “before the veil” that stands by the ark of the testimony, and “before the mercy seat” that is over the testimony. The location is described with layered reference points so it cannot be mistaken: it is outside the veil but directly in front of what lies beyond it. This is also identified as the place “where I will meet with you,” linking the altar’s placement to the recognized meeting point.
A second shared emphasis is mobility. The altar is built with rings and poles so it can be carried with the rest of the sanctuary items (vv.4–5). Nothing here is improvised; transport is part of its design.
Finally, the passage ties location to meaning. The altar is placed just outside the inner veil, aligned with the ark and the mercy seat area, and explicitly associated with the place where God says he will meet with Moses (v.6). The closeness is real, but the veil remains a boundary.
Some readers think the phrase “before the mercy seat” (v.6) is meant as spatial precision (“set it in a direct line facing the mercy seat”), while others think it is mainly relational emphasis (“this altar belongs to the sphere of the inner sanctuary even though it stands outside the veil”). Either way, the text still places it “before the veil” and thus not inside the most restricted space.
There is also uncertainty about what the altar’s “horns” (v.2) signify beyond being a required feature. Many take them as a standard altar feature that could be used in later rites; others treat them here as primarily structural/visual continuity with other altars. In these verses, the horns are described, not explained.
Why the disagreement exists The passage gives firm instructions on materials, measurements, and placement, but it does not explain the symbolic meaning of horns, gold overlay, or the “before” language in v.6. That leaves room for readers to infer purpose from wider tabernacle patterns and later biblical uses.
What this passage clearly contributes It clarifies that Israel’s worship space includes a dedicated incense altar, distinct in size and function (vv.1–2), richly overlaid with gold (v.3), designed for transport (vv.4–5), and positioned at the threshold of the inner sanctuary near the meeting point between God and Moses (v.6).
