Question 1

What does Exodus 31:18 portray as happening immediately after God finishes speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai?

Accepted Answer

The verse links the end of God’s speaking with a formal handoff: God “gave to Moses” two tablets. The timing (“when he finished speaking”) makes the tablets the capstone of the mountain encounter, not a separate, unrelated event. The location (“on Mount Sinai”) keeps the reader anchored in the same setting as the preceding instructions. The action is not Moses producing a record for himself; it is God giving Moses an authoritative object that carries forward what has been spoken.

Question 2

Why might the text emphasize that there were “two” tablets? What does the verse itself clearly say, and what does it leave open?

Accepted Answer

The verse clearly states the number: “the two tablets of the testimony.” It does not explain why there are two, how the material is arranged, or how much text is included on them. The emphasis on “two” likely signals that this is a specific, recognizable set of covenant tablets within the narrative, preparing for later scenes where the tablets are described, carried, and (in the next chapter) broken. But Exodus 31:18 itself leaves the precise layout and rationale unstated.

Question 3

In this verse, what does the title “tablets of the testimony” suggest about the function of the tablets?

Accepted Answer

Calling them “the testimony” suggests they are more than a memory aid; they serve as a formal witness to the covenant words spoken at Sinai. A “testimony” functions like an official record that can be referred to, preserved, and treated as authoritative. The verse does not define the term in detail, but it pushes the reader toward seeing the tablets as the tangible, enduring reference point for Israel’s covenant obligations, not merely a ceremonial artifact.

Question 4

How does the material description “stone tablets” shape the meaning of the scene?

Accepted Answer

“Stone tablets” highlights durability and permanence. In a world where many messages could be delivered orally or written on less durable materials, stone implies that what is recorded is meant to last and to be safeguarded. The verse ties this lasting medium to “the testimony,” reinforcing the idea of an enduring covenant witness. The text does not yet describe where the tablets will be kept, but the emphasis on stone already signals seriousness and long-term preservation.

Question 5

What is the main point of the statement “written with God’s finger” according to the verse’s wording?

Accepted Answer

The phrase assigns authorship and authority to God. The verse contrasts with a scenario where Moses writes down God’s words on his own initiative; instead, the writing is directly attributed to God in vivid, human-like terms (“finger”). The text does not explain the mechanics, but its communicative force is clear: the tablets’ message is not merely Moses’ interpretation of what he heard. It is presented as God’s own inscribed testimony.

Question 6

How does Exodus 31:18 function as a transition in the surrounding narrative?

Accepted Answer

Exodus 31:18 closes a long stretch dominated by God’s instructions to Moses (about worship, sacred space, priesthood, and the Sabbath sign). By noting that God “finished speaking” and then gave the tablets, the verse marks a shift from receiving revelation on the mountain to the next developments involving Israel’s actions off the mountain. It also anticipates later narrative tension surrounding the tablets (they will be seen, carried, and damaged), making 31:18 a hinge between instruction and response.

Question 7

What elements in the verse support the idea that the tablets carry official covenant authority rather than private spiritual experience?

Accepted Answer

Several features point in that direction: (1) God is the giver, emphasizing divine initiative; (2) the tablets are “the testimony,” a public-facing term for an authoritative record; (3) they are stone, suggesting lasting preservation; and (4) the writing is attributed to God (“God’s finger”), reinforcing that the authority is not grounded in Moses’ personal insight. The verse frames the moment as a formal transfer of covenant witness, not merely a mystical encounter.
