How forgiveness fits with “by no means clear the guilty” (v. 7). Some read these phrases as describing two groups: God forgives those who repent but does not treat the stubborn guilty as innocent. Others read it as describing one coherent policy: God truly forgives, yet forgiveness does not erase all consequences or remove accountability.
What “visiting the iniquity…to the third and fourth generation” implies (v. 7). Some understand it as direct punishment on later descendants for earlier ancestors’ sins.
