Question 1

What exactly do Moses and Aaron ask for in verse 1, and what purpose do they give for it?

Accepted Answer

In verse 1 they present the request as Yahweh’s own command rather than their personal proposal: “Let my people go.” The stated purpose is not simply rest or a change of location, but a religious gathering: “that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.” The wording links release directly to worship. It also implies that Israel belongs to Yahweh (“my people”), which already challenges Pharaoh’s assumption that Israel’s time and labor are his to control. The “wilderness” setting suggests separation from Egypt’s normal oversight and from its religious setting.

Question 2

How does Pharaoh justify his refusal in verse 2?

Accepted Answer

Pharaoh’s refusal rests on two connected claims. First, he challenges Yahweh’s identity and relevance: “Who is Yahweh…?” and “I don’t know Yahweh.” Second, he draws a conclusion about authority: because he does not recognize Yahweh, he will not “listen to his voice” and will not let Israel go. The logic is that an unknown or unacknowledged deity has no claim over Pharaoh’s decisions. The verse also shows that the dispute is not only about policy but about whether Pharaoh will treat Yahweh as someone whose words carry binding weight.

Question 3

In verse 3, how do Moses and Aaron restate their request, and what new elements do they add?

Accepted Answer

They restate the request with more specifics: “Please let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to Yahweh, our God.” Compared to verse 1’s “feast,” this focuses on sacrifices and a defined travel distance. They also add a warning about consequences if they do not sacrifice: Yahweh might “fall on us with pestilence, or with the sword.” That makes the request sound like prevention of harm rather than a mere preference. The verse frames their worship as an obligation that cannot be ignored without risk.

Question 4

What does Pharaoh’s reply in verses 4–5 reveal about how he interprets the request?

Accepted Answer

Pharaoh interprets the whole request through the lens of labor control. He names Moses and Aaron and accuses them of taking people away from their work, then commands, “Get back to your burdens.” In verse 5 he emphasizes the scale of the workforce (“the people of the land are now many”) and claims Moses and Aaron are making them “rest” from their burdens. He does not engage the religious claim or the warning in verse 3. Instead, he treats the request as a threat to productivity and authority, implying that any pause from forced labor is unacceptable.

Question 5

What tension does the passage set up between Yahweh’s claim and Pharaoh’s claim?

Accepted Answer

Yahweh’s message assumes a prior claim on Israel: “Let my people go,” with worship as the proper goal. Pharaoh’s responses assume his own claim: Israel is a labor force bound to “burdens,” and leaders who disrupt that work are a problem. The tension is not only whether Israel may travel, but whose authority defines Israel’s identity and purpose—worshipers belonging to Yahweh or workers belonging to Pharaoh. This scene begins the larger pattern of escalation in Exodus: a clear divine demand meets a hardened political refusal, raising the stakes for what follows.

Question 6

How do the terms “feast” (v.1) and “sacrifice” (v.3) shape the meaning of what Israel is asking to do?

Accepted Answer

“Feast” suggests a communal, celebratory religious gathering in Yahweh’s honor, not merely a private prayer. “Sacrifice” makes the worship concrete and costly, tied to ritual actions that would be visible and publicly meaningful. Together, they show that Israel’s request is about practicing allegiance to Yahweh in a setting outside Egypt’s control (“in the wilderness”). This also helps explain why Pharaoh might see the request as more than a short break: it involves organized, collective action that could build shared identity and loyalty beyond Pharaoh’s supervision.

Question 7

What details in the dialogue show that this is an authority conflict, not just a scheduling dispute?

Accepted Answer

Several lines highlight authority. Moses and Aaron introduce the message as Yahweh’s direct speech, a command rather than a negotiation. Pharaoh answers in terms of obedience: “that I should listen to his voice,” then denies both knowledge (“I don’t know Yahweh”) and compliance (“I will not let Israel go”). Moses and Aaron then appeal again to Yahweh’s identity (“God of the Hebrews”) and to consequences Yahweh might bring. Pharaoh finally issues his own commands (“Get back”) and frames the issue as controlling a large population. Competing “voices” are central.
