Question 1

In verse 29, what exactly does Moses promise to do, and what does he warn Pharaoh against?

Accepted Answer

Moses promises two connected things: he will leave Pharaoh’s presence, and he will pray to Yahweh so that the swarms of flies depart the next day. The promise is not that Moses himself will remove the flies, but that he will ask Yahweh to do it. Alongside that promise, Moses adds a warning: Pharaoh must not “deal deceitfully” again by refusing to let the people go to sacrifice. The warning assumes Pharaoh has either already backed out before or is likely to back out again once the crisis passes.

Question 2

What details in verses 30–31 show that the removal of the flies is portrayed as an answer to Moses’ mediation rather than a coincidence?

Accepted Answer

The text narrates a tight sequence: Moses leaves Pharaoh and prays, then Yahweh “did according to the word of Moses.” That phrasing directly connects Moses’ request with Yahweh’s action. The timing marker (“tomorrow”) also supports intentionality rather than accident: the removal happens on schedule, consistent with Moses’ stated plan to pray. Finally, the scope is comprehensive—flies removed from Pharaoh, officials, and people—so the relief is pictured as a decisive intervention, not a gradual fading.

Question 3

Why does verse 31 stress that the flies were removed from Pharaoh, his servants, and his people?

Accepted Answer

Listing Pharaoh, his servants (officials), and his people shows the plague was not limited to one corner of society; it affected the whole governing structure and the wider population. This also makes the reversal equally total: Yahweh removes the swarms from every level, not just from the palace. The point is both political and narrative: the crisis and its resolution are public and comprehensive, and Pharaoh’s later refusal can’t be excused as if only he benefited or only he suffered.

Question 4

What is the significance of the statement, “There remained not one,” in verse 31?

Accepted Answer

“There remained not one” emphasizes completeness. The narrative is not satisfied with saying the plague lessened; it portrays Yahweh as removing it entirely. This strengthens the claim that Yahweh, not Pharaoh, controls the situation. It also heightens the moral clarity of Pharaoh’s response in verse 32: since the relief is total, Pharaoh’s continued refusal is not driven by ongoing emergency conditions. The story uses complete removal to expose the pattern of concession-under-pressure followed by refusal-after-relief.

Question 5

How does verse 32 portray Pharaoh’s response, and how is it tied to what came before?

Accepted Answer

Verse 32 says Pharaoh “hardened his heart this time also” and did not let the people go. The phrase “this time also” links his response to previous cycles in the plague narratives: pressure leads to negotiation, but relief leads to renewed resistance. The verse presents his refusal as persistent, not momentary. It also answers Moses’ warning in verse 29: Moses cautioned Pharaoh not to act deceptively again, and the closing line shows Pharaoh repeating the pattern Moses anticipated.

Question 6

What does the “tomorrow” timing in verse 29 contribute to the narrative flow of this episode?

Accepted Answer

The “tomorrow” detail contributes structure and testable timing. It makes the expected removal specific rather than vague, so the reader can see whether Moses’ promise and Yahweh’s action align. It also fits the repeated rhythm in these plague accounts: an announced action, a set time, then fulfillment. Within the negotiation context, “tomorrow” can function like a clear benchmark—Pharaoh can’t later claim the crisis simply passed on its own without any relation to Moses’ prayer.

Question 7

Based on verses 29–31, what is the implied relationship between Moses’ “word,” Moses’ prayer, and Yahweh’s action?

Accepted Answer

Moses’ “word” includes his stated intent to pray and the expected result—the flies departing. Moses then acts consistently with his word by leaving and praying. Yahweh then acts “according to the word of Moses,” which implies Yahweh responds to Moses’ mediation in a way that publicly confirms Moses’ role as Yahweh’s representative. The passage does not say Moses controls Yahweh; rather, it depicts Yahweh choosing to act in alignment with Moses’ announced request, making the outcome recognizable as Yahweh’s intervention.
