Question 1

What does Ezekiel explicitly identify the “living creature” as in v.20, and what earlier setting does he connect it to?

Accepted Answer

In v.20 Ezekiel says the “living creature” he saw is the same one he had seen “under the God of Israel” by the river Chebar, and he states that he knew “they were cherubim.” The verse does two things at once: it names the beings (cherubim) and it anchors the temple vision to the earlier river vision. The identification is explicit; it is not left as a guess. The Chebar reference signals continuity across locations, linking what Ezekiel sees near the temple with what he saw among the exiles in Babylon.

Question 2

How do vv.21–22 use repetition to confirm identity rather than add new description?

Accepted Answer

The verses repeat a compact checklist of traits: four faces, four wings, and humanlike hands under the wings (v.21). Then v.22 doubles down by saying the faces were the same faces Ezekiel had seen at Chebar and that their “appearances and themselves” were the same. The repetition functions like matching identifiers, not like introducing a new category of beings. Even the movement is reiterated: each goes straight forward. Taken together, the repeated traits work as confirmation that Ezekiel is describing the same kind of beings from the earlier vision.

Question 3

What details does the passage give about the creatures’ bodies (faces, wings, hands), and how is the language qualified?

Accepted Answer

The passage specifies that each creature has four faces and four wings (v.21). It also says there was “the likeness of the hands of a man” under their wings, which qualifies the description as resemblance rather than a plain anatomical claim. In v.22 Ezekiel again uses “likeness” regarding their faces and stresses that the faces match what he saw earlier. These qualifiers matter because they show Ezekiel reporting visionary appearance—what he perceived and how it compared—rather than giving a technical, measured description of physical creatures in ordinary space.

Question 4

What does “under the God of Israel” contribute to the picture in v.20?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “under the God of Israel” places the living creatures in relation to God’s throne-like presence in the vision. At minimum it is a spatial indicator: the creatures are positioned beneath the divine presence Ezekiel sees. It also naturally implies a hierarchy within the vision: these beings are attendants associated with God’s appearing and movement. The passage itself does not spell out their function here, but it frames them as closely connected to God’s presence rather than independent actors. The Chebar reference shows this arrangement was already part of Ezekiel’s earlier vision.

Question 5

How does v.22 describe sameness, and why might it use both “appearances” and “themselves”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 states that the faces were the same as those seen by the river Chebar, and then adds “their appearances and themselves” were the same. This stacks two claims: outward look matches, and the identity of the beings matches. The pairing may be intended to remove doubt—Ezekiel is not saying merely that these creatures resemble the earlier ones, but that they are the same beings he encountered before. Even without parsing every nuance, the verse’s effect is emphatic confirmation: same faces, same overall reality, not a different set of creatures.

Question 6

What is the significance of the repeated movement description: “they went every one straight forward”?

Accepted Answer

The statement that each went “straight forward” echoes earlier movement descriptions in the larger vision and underlines a consistent pattern: their motion is purposeful and aligned rather than wandering. In the immediate context of identification, it functions as another matching feature—Ezekiel recognizes not only their appearance but also their characteristic movement. The passage does not explain the mechanics, but the description fits the broader portrayal of an orderly, coordinated heavenly scene. It also reinforces the sense that the same kind of vision is being continued from Chebar to the temple setting.
