Question 1

What actions and positions are described in verse 22, and how do they present the relationship between the cherubim, wheels, and God’s glory?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 stacks three observations: the cherubim lift their wings (departure readiness), the wheels are beside them (the mobile platform is prepared), and “the glory of the God of Israel” is over them above (the divine presence is portrayed as enthroned over the moving beings). The verse does not explain mechanics, but it clearly links motion (wings, wheels) with presence (glory above). Within the larger vision (chs. 8–11), this continues the idea that God’s presence is mobile rather than fixed to one building.

Question 2

In verse 23, what is the movement of Yahweh’s glory, and what two locations does the verse contrast?

Accepted Answer

Verse 23 describes the glory “going up” from “the midst of the city” and then “standing” on the mountain east of the city. The contrast is between Jerusalem’s interior center (“the midst”) and an external vantage point (“the mountain…on the east side”). The verse does not explicitly say what happens after the glory stands there, but it does show withdrawal from the city itself. In the story’s flow, this is the culminating step in the glory leaving the temple/city area.

Question 3

According to verse 24, how does Ezekiel get from Jerusalem back to Chaldea, and what phrases show that this is a visionary transport rather than ordinary travel?

Accepted Answer

Ezekiel says “the Spirit lifted me up” and brought him “in the vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea.” Those phrases locate the movement in the realm of Spirit-mediated experience rather than normal travel. The verse also identifies his destination as the exiles (“them of the captivity”), matching Ezekiel’s real-life setting in Babylonia. The text is careful to say both “in the vision” and “by the Spirit,” reinforcing that Ezekiel’s relocation is part of the prophetic encounter and not a narrated journey on foot.

Question 4

What does the statement “the vision…went up from me” most directly communicate in verse 24?

Accepted Answer

Most directly, it signals that the visionary experience ended: what Ezekiel had been seeing is no longer present to him. The wording “went up from me” fits the passage’s repeated upward/moving language (glory “went up,” cherubim lift wings), but the explicit claim is experiential: the vision departs from Ezekiel after he is brought back to the exiles. The text does not add details about duration or aftereffects; it simply closes the vision sequence that began when he was taken to Jerusalem in the Spirit.

Question 5

What is Ezekiel’s first action after the vision ends (v. 25), and what does that imply about the purpose of the vision narrative?

Accepted Answer

Ezekiel’s first action is to speak: he tells the exile community “all the things that Yahweh had showed” him. This implies the vision is not an end in itself but a basis for public proclamation. The audience is specifically “them of the captivity,” the displaced Judeans in Babylonia, so the vision’s purpose includes interpreting Jerusalem’s condition for people who are not physically there. The verse also stresses completeness (“all the things”), presenting Ezekiel as a faithful reporter of what was shown rather than an editor of a private experience.

Question 6

How do verses 22–23 and 24–25 function as a conclusion to the larger Jerusalem vision (Ezekiel 8–11)?

Accepted Answer

Verses 22–23 conclude the “Jerusalem” portion by showing the throne-vision moving away and the glory leaving the city’s center for the mountain to the east. Verses 24–25 then conclude the “Ezekiel” portion by returning the prophet to his actual community in Babylonia, ending the vision, and shifting from seeing to speaking. Together they close the narrative loop: Ezekiel had been taken in the Spirit to observe Jerusalem, and now he is brought back in the Spirit to deliver the message. The conclusion ties divine movement and prophetic communication into one ending.
