The throne-vision prepares to move The cherubim raise their wings as if to depart, and the wheels that belong with them are next to them, ready to roll. The glory of the God of Israel is described as being above them, emphasizing that the moving platform is carrying the divine presence.
The glory leaves the city and pauses eastward The glory of Yahweh rises from the middle of Jerusalem and takes a position on the mountain east of the city. The movement signals withdrawal from the city’s center, and the stopping point suggests a moment of poised departure rather than an immediate disappearance.

Literary Context
These verses close the extended vision that began with Ezekiel being taken to Jerusalem and shown what was happening there (Ezekiel 8–11). The vision has moved from exposing corrupt practices, to announcing consequences, to showing the divine presence leaving the temple area step by step. Ezekiel 11 has included both condemnation of Jerusalem’s leaders and words aimed at the exiles about God’s future work among them. Now the narrative resolves: the throne-vision departs the city, Ezekiel returns to his audience, and the prophet shifts from seeing to speaking.
Historical Context
Ezekiel is speaking as part of the Judean community living in Babylonia after an earlier deportation from Judah. Jerusalem still stands at this point, but it is politically pressured and unstable under Babylon’s dominance, and its leaders are contested. In this setting, questions about where Israel’s God is present and what will happen to Jerusalem are urgent for both those still in the land and those already displaced. Ezekiel’s vision answers by portraying a mobile divine presence and by directing the prophet to communicate the message to the exiled community.
Theological Significance
These verses finish Ezekiel’s long, Spirit-given tour of Jerusalem (chs. 8–11). The scene is not mainly about human travel but about God’s presence moving: the cherubim and wheels are ready to go, and the “glory” of Yahweh is described as located above them. The narrative then shows that glory leaving the city’s center and relocating to the mountain east of Jerusalem.

How literal to picture the throne-vision details. Some readers treat cherubim, wheels, and spatial motion as describing a real heavenly reality shown to Ezekiel. Others read the same language as highly symbolic description meant to communicate theological truth (God is not tied to the temple; God can withdraw).
What “the vision went up from me” describes. Some take it as a vivid way to say the vision “lifted away” and ended. Others think it also hints at the direction of the departing glory (upward/away), linking Ezekiel’s experience to the larger departure theme.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses visionary language that is concrete (movement, location, mountain, wings, wheels) yet comes from an experience explicitly called a “vision” and mediated “by the Spirit.” That combination invites different judgments about how much is being reported as seen geography and how much is being narrated as symbolic staging. Also, the text says the glory “stood” on the east mountain without spelling out whether it leaves immediately afterward or remains there for a time.
