Commission to confront Ezekiel is addressed as “son of man” and told to turn his attention directly against certain women from “your people.” Their problem is stated up front: they “prophesy out of their own heart,” meaning their messages are sourced from themselves rather than from God. Ezekiel is commanded to speak an oracle against them.
Woe and the imagery of hunting lives God announces “woe” to these women and describes them as sewing something onto elbows/arms and making head coverings for people “of every stature.” These items are connected to a purpose: “to hunt souls,” that is, to trap or capture lives. God challenges them with pointed questions: will they really hunt the lives of God’s people while keeping themselves alive?
Profaning God for small profit and reversing outcomes God accuses them of treating his name as worthless among the people in exchange for trivial payment (“handfuls of barley” and “pieces of bread”). The result is portrayed as deadly misdirection: they cause the death of those who should not die and preserve the life of those who should not live. The means is deception—“lying” to people who are already inclined to listen to lies.
Literary Context
This unit sits inside a longer attack on unauthorized prophecy in Ezekiel 13. Earlier, Ezekiel addresses male prophets who announce “peace” when there is no peace and who build up false confidence. The focus then shifts to “the daughters of your people,” presenting the same basic problem in another form: claims of divine speech that actually come from human desire and manipulation. The passage works like a formal announcement of judgment (“woe”), then a description of what these women are doing, and finally the charge that their words and practices distort outcomes for the community.
Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks as a prophet among Judean exiles living under Babylonian control in the early 6th century BC. The community is disoriented by displacement and by the crisis unfolding back in Judah and Jerusalem. In such conditions, people are hungry for guidance, prediction, and reassurance, and competing religious voices can gain influence. Ezekiel portrays some of these voices as exploitative, offering messages and rituals that promise security or protection for a price. The oracle reflects internal conflict within the exiled people over who speaks reliably and what kinds of religious practices shape communal choices.

Also, “life” language ("souls/lives") can refer both to a person’s life itself and to their well-being or fate, so readers differ on how concrete the outcomes are meant to be.
Explicitly, the text claims that unauthorized prophecy is not a harmless mistake: it profanes God’s name, commodifies sacred speech, and produces unjust outcomes—“death” for those who should not die and “life” for those who should not live. Theologically (as inference from those claims), Ezekiel ties truthfulness about God to community health: false claims of divine backing can reorder a society’s sense of who is safe, who is condemned, and whose lives are treated as expendable.
It also clarifies that the problem is not the women’s gender but their role and behavior: they “prophesy” falsely, take payment, and deceive people who are already inclined to accept deception. The passage adds a concrete example of how spiritual authority can be used to manipulate vulnerable communities in crisis (compare the wider attack on false prophecy in Ezekiel 13:1–16).
