Turning from wrongdoing changes the outcome If the wicked person turns from “all” the wrongs he committed, keeps God’s statutes, and does what is lawful and right, the result is emphatic: he will live and not die. The text then explains how this works: earlier transgressions are not “remembered against” him; instead, the life-result is tied to the right conduct he now does.
God’s stated preference behind the warning God asks whether he takes pleasure in the death of the wicked. The implied answer is no. The stated preference is that the person “return from his way” and live, giving the earlier case a purpose: to motivate turning rather than despair.
Turning away from right also changes the outcome The mirror case reverses the direction. These verses sit inside Ezekiel 18’s larger argument about personal responsibility and the fairness of God’s ways. The passage uses two mirrored cases—wicked-to-obedient and righteous-to-violent/abominable—to show that the relevant question is not only “What were you?” but “What are you doing now?” Verse 23 pauses the case logic to state God’s stated preference: turning back and living, not dying.
Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks to Judeans living through national collapse and exile under Babylonian control, when many were trying to explain disaster and assign blame. In that setting, questions about who is responsible and whether change still matters would be urgent. The prophet addresses a community tempted to fatalism (“our situation is fixed”) or to shifting responsibility (“others caused this”). This unit frames individual moral course and accountability as meaningful in the present, even while the wider society is under imperial pressure and dislocation.
Theological Significance
These verses present two mirrored case-studies: a person known for wrongdoing can turn and live, and a person known for doing right can turn and die. The key point is that the stated outcome is not locked in by someone’s past label (“wicked” or “righteous”) but is tied to the direction of their present course.

What “live” and “die” mean. Some readers take “live” and “die” mainly as concrete outcomes within Israel’s covenant life (continued life, security, and standing in the community versus death and removal). Others think the language reaches beyond that to a broader, ultimate sense of life and death. The text itself does not spell out the scope, so conclusions here are partly inference.
What “not remembered” means. Some understand “not remembered against him” as full pardon in God’s accounting: past wrongs no longer count toward the outcome once the person has turned. Others hear it more as “not brought up for judgment now,” stressing the passage’s focus on present direction rather than giving a detailed theory of how God relates to past actions.
The paragraph uses everyday moral language (turning, doing right, dying, living) without defining whether the horizon is primarily social/physical or ultimate. It also uses accounting language (“remembered against”) without explaining the mechanism—whether it describes God’s settled verdict, a change in how past deeds are considered, or the public consequences within the community.
The text explicitly teaches reversibility: turning from wrongdoing to obedience changes the announced result to life (vv. 21–22), and turning from righteousness to wrongdoing changes the announced result to death (v. 24). It also explicitly says past deeds—whether sins or righteous acts—are not remembered against the person once their direction has changed (vv. 22, 24). And it explicitly anchors the warning in God’s stated preference for turning and life rather than death (v. 23).
