These verses continue directly from the opening vision where Ezekiel encounters an overwhelming throne-like appearance and falls down in response (the end of chapter 1). Chapter 2 begins the commissioning moment: the voice turns from being merely seen to being heard and understood in words. The command to stand moves the scene from collapse to readiness, and it prepares for the longer message that follows about Ezekiel’s assignment and audience (2:3 and beyond). Historical Context
Ezekiel’s call comes during Judah’s national crisis under Babylonian dominance, with many Judeans already living in forced relocation outside their homeland. Prophetic speech in this setting addressed disorientation and loss, as community life was being reshaped under imperial control. The passage’s focus on being made to stand and to hear fits a situation where a displaced priest-prophet is being redirected into a public role. Why the disagreement exists The text gives strong effects (Spirit enters; Ezekiel stands; Ezekiel hears) but few details about identity and mechanism. Since the speaker is unnamed and “Spirit” can describe God’s empowering presence in more than one way, readers lean on the surrounding vision (ch. 1) and on how “Spirit” functions elsewhere in Ezekiel.
What this passage clearly contributes These verses establish the basic pattern for Ezekiel’s commission: God initiates contact, calls Ezekiel “son of man,” commands readiness (“stand”), and supplies the needed ability through the Spirit so that Ezekiel can receive the word. Communication is not portrayed as Ezekiel’s achievement; it is enabled, and the enabling is tied directly to hearing God’s speech (Ezekiel 2:1–2).
