Question 1

What direct instructions are given to Ezekiel in this verse?

Accepted Answer

The verse contains a sequence of imperatives addressed to Ezekiel: he must “hear” what God tells him, he must not be “rebellious” like the “rebellious house,” he must “open” his mouth, and he must “eat” what God gives. The flow matters: attentive listening comes first, then a warning about not sharing the people’s resistant posture, and then a concrete act that represents receiving what God provides. The commands present Ezekiel as responsive and dependent, not as someone who crafts his own message or decides its terms.

Question 2

How does the phrase “son of man” function in the verse’s address?

Accepted Answer

“Son of man” is the form of address God uses for Ezekiel here, marking the speech as personal and direct. In this verse, it mainly functions to identify the prophet as the one being commissioned and held responsible to respond. The point is not to elevate Ezekiel but to speak to him as a human messenger who must listen and obey. The verse’s emphasis falls on what Ezekiel does next—hearing and receiving what God gives—rather than on the title itself.

Question 3

What does the verse explicitly say about the people Ezekiel is being sent to?

Accepted Answer

The verse refers to the audience as “that rebellious house,” and it treats their rebellion as a defining characteristic in the immediate setting. The statement is not an abstract comment about humanity in general; it is a description of the community Ezekiel is facing in this commissioning scene. By placing this description inside the instruction to Ezekiel (“don’t be rebellious like that rebellious house”), the verse uses the people’s resistance as a contrast: the messenger must not adopt the same refusal toward God’s word that the hearers already display.

Question 4

What is the relationship between “hear what I tell you” and “eat what I give you”?

Accepted Answer

Both instructions underline reception. “Hear” stresses attentive listening to God’s words; “eat what I give you” intensifies that idea by picturing God’s message as something provided to Ezekiel that must be taken in. The verse links the two: Ezekiel’s speaking role depends on first receiving, not inventing. Even without quoting the next verses, the immediate context points toward a divinely supplied message (later shown as a scroll). The imagery communicates that the prophet’s message is grounded in what comes from God to him.

Question 5

In what sense could Ezekiel be tempted to be “rebellious,” according to the verse’s logic?

Accepted Answer

The verse assumes that rebellion is not only a trait of the audience but a possible danger for the prophet. Within the logic of the commissioning, Ezekiel could “be rebellious” by resisting what God tells him—refusing to receive it, shrinking back from it, or altering it because the people are resistant. The warning comes right before the command to “eat” what God gives, suggesting that obedience involves accepting God’s message as given. The contrast is between refusing the word and taking it in.

Question 6

What does “open your mouth” contribute to the picture being drawn?

Accepted Answer

“Open your mouth” sets up the act of “eating” and makes the image concrete: Ezekiel is to respond actively to what God gives, not remain passive. The phrase also subtly anticipates Ezekiel’s role as a speaker: mouths are for speech, yet here the mouth is first for receiving. In the verse’s sequence, the mouth is opened not to originate a message but to take in God’s provision. That ordering reinforces the passage’s point that proclamation follows reception.

Question 7

What minimal meaning does the “eat” imagery communicate even if the action is understood as visionary?

Accepted Answer

Even if “eat” is read as part of a vision rather than a physical act, the core meaning remains that Ezekiel must internalize God’s message. Eating is a way of saying the words are not merely heard at a distance; they become part of the prophet before he speaks them. The verse explicitly connects the eating to “what I give you,” stressing God as the source and Ezekiel as the receiver. The image communicates dependence, obedience, and thorough reception prior to delivery.
