Ezekiel 20 is structured as a long response to Israel’s elders who come to seek guidance (20:1). Verses 33–38 shift from past history to a forceful future: the Lord will not allow the people’s attempt to “be like the nations” to stand (20:32), but will reassert rule over them. Historical Context
Ezekiel spoke among Judean exiles living under the Neo-Babylonian Empire after major deportations from Judah. Many in the displaced community were scattered across different locations within Babylonian-controlled territories, while others remained in Judah or in surrounding regions. In this setting, questions about national identity, leadership, land, and the future were urgent. Ezekiel 20 addresses a community tempted to blend into surrounding cultures and to treat exile as permanent relocation.
