Verse by Verse
The land left unclean and unwatered The message begins with a new divine word. Ezekiel is told to address the land as “not cleansed,” and also as not receiving rain “in the day of indignation.” The picture is of a place left exposed—no washing, no refreshing rain—when pressure and crisis arrive.
Prophets and priests as destroyers and boundary-breakers The prophets are described as acting together like a roaring lion, taking lives and valuables and multiplying widows. The priests are charged with abusing God’s instruction and treating holy things as ordinary. They fail to teach the people how to tell clean from unclean, ignore the Sabbaths, and so God’s name is treated as common among the people.
Princes as predators; prophets as cover-up artists The princes are compared to wolves that shed blood and destroy lives for dishonest gain. Then the prophets reappear, not as protectors but as those who cover the rulers’ actions with a coating of “whitewash”: they claim visions and messages from the Lord Yahweh even though Yahweh has not spoken.
Literary Context
This unit sits inside Ezekiel 22, a chapter made up of accusations that explain why Jerusalem is heading toward disaster. Earlier in the chapter the city is described as bloodstained and polluted, and the leaders are blamed for creating the conditions that ruin communal life. Verses 23–29 continue that same logic but shift to a structured sweep through social groups, showing corruption from top to bottom. The section also prepares for what follows (vv. 30–31), where the lack of anyone able to “stand in the gap” becomes the final, climactic assessment.
Historical Context
Ezekiel spoke during Judah’s final decades and the early exile, when Babylon dominated the region and Jerusalem’s political and religious institutions were under strain. In that setting, people looked to prophets for direction, priests for teaching and worship order, and officials for justice and security. Ezekiel portrays these institutions as failing at the very tasks that hold a society together. The references to Sabbath, holy/common, and clean/unclean assume a temple-centered culture where public life and worship were closely connected, so the breakdown is both social and religious.
Theological Significance
Ezekiel 22:23–29 presents a “total-society” indictment. The land is described as uncleansed and exposed “in the day of indignation,” and then the major social and religious groups are named in turn: prophets, priests, princes, and finally “the people of the land.” The wrongdoing is not vague. It is pictured as predation (lion/wolf imagery), theft, violence, exploitation of the vulnerable, and religious distortion.

The people imitate the pattern The accusation ends with the “people of the land.” They practice oppression and robbery, mistreat the poor and needy, and exploit the sojourner. The corruption is not limited to leadership; it has become the community’s normal behavior.
A key shared point is that the passage connects public injustice with religious failure. Priests blur boundaries between holy/common and clean/unclean and disregard Sabbaths; prophets supply false messages that protect the powerful; rulers pursue “dishonest gain.” The result is that God’s name is treated as ordinary among the people (an explicit claim of v. 26).
Who is being addressed (“tell her… you are a land”): Some read “her” as the city/community (Jerusalem/Judah) being spoken to, with “land” functioning as a poetic label for the whole society. Others take the wording more literally: Ezekiel is told to address the land itself, emphasizing that the whole territory is polluted and vulnerable.
“Not rained on in the day of indignation”: Some interpret this as literal drought alongside coming judgment. Others read it mainly as metaphor: no cleansing and no life-giving refreshment when crisis hits, portraying abandonment and exposure.
“Conspiracy of her prophets” and “whitewash”: Some understand “conspiracy” as coordinated leadership wrongdoing—prophets working together with shared intent. Others take it more broadly as a systemic pattern: prophets collectively function like a conspiracy even if not formally organized. “Whitewash” is commonly taken as covering up evil with reassuring religious talk; readers differ on whether the main target is propaganda for rulers, denial of danger, or shallow comfort that refuses moral reality.
The Hebrew imagery is compressed and metaphor-heavy. “Land,” “rain,” and animal predators can be read both concretely and figuratively, and the text does not specify the mechanics (e.g., whether a formal plot exists among prophets). Also, the passage moves between social critique and temple categories (clean/unclean; Sabbaths), which invites different judgments about how literally to read the symbols.
This unit contributes a picture of judgment grounded in the collapse of trustworthy leadership and the spread of exploitation across the whole community. It explicitly claims that each group—prophets, priests, princes, and ordinary people—participates in harm: violence, theft, dishonest gain, and abuse of the poor and the outsider. It also explicitly links priestly failure to the public profaning of God’s name (v. 26). The passage sets up the next section’s conclusion that no one is found to “stand in the gap” (vv. 30–31), because corruption is presented as comprehensive rather than isolated.
