Historical Context
Tyre was a wealthy coastal city-state known for maritime trade and strong defenses, and its leaders could project near-untouchable confidence. Ezekiel spoke from exile under Babylonian dominance, when major powers used sieges and vassal control to reshape the region. In that setting, the threat of “strangers” and “terrible ones of the nations” fits the world of imperial armies and multi-ethnic forces. The imagery of dying “in the heart of the seas” matches Tyre’s island/sea-linked identity and suggests a downfall that reaches into the very environment that had supported its security and commerce.
Theological Significance
