Cleansing and rebuilding begin together Yahweh links two actions on the same “day”: he will remove Israel’s wrongdoings, and he will repopulate cities and rebuild ruins. The point is that moral restoration and physical restoration move together in Yahweh’s plan; the land’s recovery is not presented as accidental or merely human initiative.
Productive land replaces visible abandonment The formerly desolate land will be cultivated again. The verse stresses how obvious the earlier devastation was—travelers could see the abandonment—so the coming change will also be publicly noticeable.

Literary Context
This unit comes within Ezekiel’s broader shift from judgment to restoration (roughly chs. 33–39). Just before this, the chapter describes Yahweh’s aim to protect his reputation among the nations by restoring Israel in a way that cannot be credited to Israel’s merit (36:16–32). Verses 33–38 then describe the practical, public results: rebuilt places, cultivated land, repopulated cities, and outside recognition. The repeated “Thus says the Lord Yahweh” frames these as firm divine commitments, and the closing “they shall know” echoes a recurring Ezekiel refrain about recognition through events.
Historical Context
Ezekiel spoke to Judeans living in exile after Babylon’s campaigns against Judah, when Jerusalem and many towns lay damaged and people were displaced. The language of “waste places,” “desolate land,” and ruined cities matches the realities of war, deportation, and abandoned agriculture. In that setting, the promise of repopulation, rebuilding, and renewed farming addresses basic survival and social recovery: housing, security, food production, and community life. The mention of surrounding “nations” fits a landscape where neighboring peoples watched Judah’s collapse and would also observe any later reversal.

The transformation is public enough that passersby and surrounding peoples notice and talk about it (v. 34–36).
A repeated theme is recognition. Outsiders conclude that this reversal is not random; it signals that Yahweh “built” and “planted” what had been devastated (v. 36). Yahweh’s own statement—he spoke and will act—frames the promise as reliable (v. 36). Israel is also portrayed as asking Yahweh to do what he has promised, and the result is population growth so great that the once-waste cities become packed (v. 37–38). The “flock” image communicates abundance and crowding, using the remembered scene of festival offerings in Jerusalem (v. 38; flock).
Some readers take the rebuilding language mainly as a straightforward prediction of national, geographic restoration after exile—actual cities, farmland, and population increase in the land. Others think the same language can also function as a broader picture of God’s renewing work for his people, with the physical imagery serving to describe a deeper change that can extend beyond one time and place.
A smaller difference concerns timing: “in the day” (v. 33) can be read as a single decisive moment when cleansing and rebuilding begin, or as a way of marking the turning point when God starts the whole restoration process.
The passage uses concrete, place-based terms (cities, land, ruined places) while also using heightened comparison (“like the garden of Eden,” v. 35) and a recognition formula (“they shall know,” v. 36, 38). That mix invites questions about how much is strict description and how much is intensified language for total reversal. Also, v. 37 links Israel’s asking with Yahweh’s stated intent, raising questions about how divine promise and human petition relate.
Explicitly, it claims Yahweh will (1) cleanse wrongdoing and (2) reverse visible ruin in the land—repopulation, rebuilding, cultivation, and security (textual claims in v. 33–36). It also claims the reversal will produce public recognition among surrounding nations that Yahweh is the actor, and that Yahweh’s speech is dependable (v. 36). Finally, it adds that Israel will “inquire” about this restoration and that the people will multiply until the cities are full, pictured as festival-sized “flocks” (v. 37–38).
