Left side—Israel’s burden Ezekiel is told to lie on his left side and place “the iniquity of the house of Israel” on that side. The length of time matters: the number of days he lies there is the measure of how long he will “bear” their iniquity.

Literary Context
These verses sit inside a cluster of enacted signs in Ezekiel 4–5 that communicate Jerusalem’s coming crisis to exiles who are far from the city. Just before this, Ezekiel sets up a model of Jerusalem under siege (4:1–3), so the side-lying is not a random stunt but part of one staged message. The actions progress in a clear sequence: first a long, measured burden connected with Israel, then a shorter one connected with Judah, and throughout Ezekiel’s posture and direction keep attention fixed on Jerusalem as the target of the warning.
Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks as part of the Judean community living under Babylonian control after an earlier deportation from Judah, while Jerusalem still stands but is politically fragile. Babylon dominates the region, and many exiles are trying to make sense of why disaster has come and what might happen next. Public symbolic actions would function as memorable, even unsettling, communication in a setting where a prophet’s spoken message might be ignored. The passage gives clear symbolic rules and totals, but it does not answer several natural follow-up questions: whether the action must be uninterrupted, what exact nuance “bear” carries in this sign-act, and how the “years” should be anchored on a timeline. Also, “house of Israel” and “house of Judah” can be read either as two historical communities (north/south) or as two aspects of one people’s guilt remembered under older divisions.
