The prince’s land as a possession and a boundary The land portion “shall be to him for a possession in Israel,” meaning the ruler has a recognized place and share within the community. The verse then states a goal: “my princes shall no more oppress my people.” The alternative practice is that they “shall give the land to the house of Israel according to their tribes,” keeping tribal allocations intact rather than taking land for themselves.
A direct rebuke and a leadership reset The Lord Yahweh addresses the “princes of Israel” with “Let it suffice you,” treating their previous actions as more than enough. They must “remove violence and spoil” (stop harming people and taking goods by force) and “execute justice and righteousness” (govern in ways that are fair and right). The closing phrase targets a specific abuse: stop “dispossessing my people,” that is, forcing them out of what belongs to them.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside Ezekiel’s closing vision describing a reordered life after disaster, including land allotments, temple arrangements, and leadership responsibilities (Ezekiel 40–48). Chapter 45 maps out set portions for sacred use and for leadership, aiming to prevent earlier patterns where rulers enriched themselves at the people’s expense. Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks to a community shaped by the loss of Jerusalem and displacement under Babylonian control. In an agrarian society, land was the basic means of survival and a key marker of belonging within the tribes.
