7:14Meaning
Mobilization signaled, but no one fights The trumpet is blown and preparations are completed, implying an official call to arms. Yet “none goes to the battle,” a stark reversal of what such a signal normally achieves. The verse explains this paralysis by stating that God’s anger is directed toward “all the multitude,” meaning the whole community is under the same grim condition.
Unit 2 (v. 15a): Threats on every side
The next line divides the danger into outside and inside: “the sword is outside,” while “pestilence and the famine” are within. The picture is of a land with no safe zone—open spaces are dangerous because of violence, and urban shelter is dangerous because conditions deteriorate.
Unit 3 (v. 15b): Outcomes depend on location, not strategy
The verse finishes with two parallel outcomes. Whoever is “in the field” dies by the sword, while whoever is “in the city” is consumed by famine and pestilence. The logic is not that one choice is better, but that every location leads to death by a different means.
