Literary Context
These lines sit inside a larger oracle in Ezekiel 7 where the prophet piles up short, forceful statements to convey inevitability and urgency. The speech is framed as a direct message from the Lord, and it advances by repetition rather than by new argument: disaster is coming; the “end” is coming; the appointed moment is now close. The chapter as a whole addresses the land and its people, using brief slogans and echoes (“behold, it comes”) to keep the hearer from imagining delay or escape.
Historical Context
Ezekiel spoke among Judeans living in exile under the Neo-Babylonian Empire after an earlier deportation from Judah. Jerusalem still stood for a time, but its political position was fragile under Babylon’s control and regional instability. Prophetic warnings like this reflect a moment when further collapse for Judah could be anticipated, with threats of military action, social breakdown, and loss of security. The language assumes an audience tempted to think normal life will continue, even as events are moving toward a decisive crisis.
Theological Significance
Ezekiel 7:5–7 presents the coming crisis as certain and close. The Lord speaks directly (“thus says the Lord Yahweh”) and repeatedly announces arrival: “behold, it comes,” “the end has come,” “the time… the day is near.” The repetition functions like an alarm, not a discussion.

The Hebrew wording is compact and somewhat idiomatic, and the prophet’s style here leans on poetic compression. That leaves room for different but closely related ways of expressing what “only” and “awakes” are emphasizing—uniqueness, completeness, and immediacy.
Explicitly, the text asserts that a single decisive calamity is approaching and cannot be wished away by delay. It names the moment as near (“time… day”) and defines its character: “tumult,” not celebration. As an inference from that contrast, Ezekiel is overturning any expectation that the approaching “day” will feel like a festival or victory; it will bring social upheaval and panic instead.
