Cyrus brings out the temple vessels The narrator says Cyrus the king “brought forth” the vessels belonging to the house of Yahweh. These are not newly made objects but the same ones previously taken. The verse recalls the earlier act: Nebuchadnezzar removed them from Jerusalem and deposited them in the house of his gods, treating them as captured sacred property relocated into Babylonian religious space.
Official transfer, counting, and delivery Cyrus, now called “king of Persia,” has the vessels brought out through Mithredath, identified as the treasurer. The action is handled through an administrator rather than informally. Mithredath “numbered” them—counting and listing them—and then handed that counted set over to Sheshbazzar, who is titled “the prince of Judah,” marking him as the recognized recipient for Judah’s community.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside the opening report of Cyrus’s policy allowing Judeans to return and rebuild (Ezra 1:1–11). After announcing the decree and stirring willing returnees (1:1–6), the story turns to concrete steps that make rebuilding possible: resources and sacred objects. Verses 7–8 begin the specific account of the temple property, which continues with totals and categories (1:9–11). The writing moves from royal initiative (Cyrus brings out the vessels) to administrative process (a treasurer counts them) to authorized custody (delivery to a Judean leader).

The scene reflects early Persian imperial administration after Persia replaced Babylon as the dominant power in the region.
