Identifying the senders and the document The text introduces “the copy of the letter,” signaling that the reader is about to hear the message as a document. It names the main sender, Tattenai, described as governor “beyond the River,” along with Shethar-bozenai and their companions, including a group called the Apharsachites. Their shared location “beyond the River” marks them as officials from the western side of the Euphrates who are reporting upward to the king.
The letter is sent and the greeting is quoted The narrative repeats that they “sent a letter” to Darius and then announces that what follows is what was written in it. The quoted content begins with a direct address—“To Darius the king”—followed by a courteous wish: “all peace.” This sets a respectful tone before the body of the report continues in the next verses.
Literary Context
In the surrounding narrative, Persian officials have questioned the rebuilding work in Judah and asked who authorized it (earlier in Ezra 5:3). Instead of immediately stopping the project, they move the issue up the imperial chain. Verses 6–7 function as the transition from on-the-ground questioning to a verbatim-style presentation of the written report. Ezra often inserts copies of documents to show how the situation unfolded through official communication and administrative steps, and this greeting is the formal doorway into that document.
Historical Context
“Beyond the River” refers to the large Persian administrative region west of the Euphrates, overseen by governors who reported to the king. Tattenai and his associates represent imperial oversight in the province that included Judah, where rebuilding activity could raise concerns about taxes, loyalty, and public order. The message is sent to Darius as the central authority who could confirm earlier permissions or issue new instructions. The opening wish of “all peace” matches common diplomatic convention for approaching a monarch and frames the report as orderly rather than rebellious.
