Question 1

In verse 13, who acts, what do they do, and what motivates their action?

Accepted Answer

Verse 13 focuses on Tattenai (the regional governor), Shethar-bozenai, and their associates. The action is administrative enforcement: they “did accordingly” with “all diligence,” meaning they carried out what the royal message required rather than delaying or resisting. The stated motivation is that “Darius the king had sent” (that is, an official order arrived). The verse highlights a reversal from earlier scrutiny to active implementation. Even without describing their inner attitude, the text stresses speed and compliance once the king’s directive is in hand.

Question 2

What does verse 14 say about who is building, and how the work is going?

Accepted Answer

Verse 14 identifies the builders as “the elders of the Jews,” highlighting recognized community leadership rather than a single hero figure. It reports that they “built and prospered,” signaling that the work advanced successfully. The text does not specify exactly whether “prospered” means faster progress, better resources, fewer obstacles, higher morale, or all of these; it simply asserts that the project went well. The emphasis is outcome-focused: the rebuilding is no longer stalled or threatened but is moving toward completion under stable leadership.

Question 3

How are Haggai and Zechariah connected to the rebuilding according to verse 14?

Accepted Answer

Verse 14 links the success of the building effort “through the prophesying of Haggai… and Zechariah.” That makes their preaching part of the story’s explanation for why the work moved forward. The verse does not spell out the content of their messages here, but it treats prophetic speech as an active support for the community’s rebuilding, alongside political and administrative factors. In other words, the passage presents the temple’s completion as involving more than construction skill or royal permission; it includes ongoing prophetic encouragement or direction as a real contributing cause.

Question 4

What kinds of authority does verse 14 say stand behind the rebuilding and completion?

Accepted Answer

Verse 14 stacks two sources of authorization. First, the temple is built and finished “according to the commandment of the God of Israel,” which frames the work as aligned with God’s will. Second, it is also “according to the decree of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia,” tying the project to imperial policy and legal permission. The verse does not argue that these authorities are equal; it simply presents them together as reinforcing grounds for legitimacy. The combined picture is that divine purpose and royal administration converge rather than compete in this outcome.

Question 5

What is the main interpretive question raised by the mention of Artaxerxes in verse 14?

Accepted Answer

The temple is explicitly dated as finished during Darius’s reign (v.15), yet Artaxerxes is also named in the list of royal decrees (v.14). The interpretive question is how Artaxerxes relates to a building project completed earlier. Some understand the verse as summarizing multiple Persian rulers who, across time, supported the restored temple system and community stability, so Artaxerxes belongs in the larger chain of support. Others read it as referring more strictly to the documentary basis for the construction itself, and then ask whether Artaxerxes had some confirming role or whether the wording reflects a later, broader framing of Persian authorization.

Question 6

What does verse 15 contribute by giving an exact date (month and day) and a regnal year?

Accepted Answer

Verse 15 anchors the completion in verifiable time: the third day of Adar, in the sixth year of King Darius. This kind of precision functions as a narrative closure marker—this is not a vague “eventually,” but a finished project with a specific endpoint. It also ties the story to the wider political world by using the king’s regnal year, showing that the temple’s rebuilding happened within Persian imperial chronology. Theologically, the dating doesn’t add a new doctrine, but it supports the book’s portrait of God’s purposes unfolding through real historical processes and official administration.

Question 7

How do verses 13–15 together portray the relationship between imperial power and the Judean community’s religious rebuilding?

Accepted Answer

Taken together, the verses show imperial power operating as both constraint and support. The Judean elders are the ones doing the building, but Persian officials have the authority to stop or protect the work, and in this scene they actively enforce Darius’s order with urgency (v.13). At the same time, the narrative does not reduce the outcome to politics alone: prophetic preaching is named as a factor in the work’s success (v.14), and God’s command is listed alongside royal decrees as the basis for completion (v.14). The relationship is portrayed as layered: local religious rebuilding advances within imperial structures while being framed as aligned with divine intent.
