The objection stated and refused Paul imagines a scenario: “while we sought to be justified in Christ,” we are “found sinners.” That is, in the very act of seeking a new basis for belonging/right standing, someone claims the seekers end up classified as sinners. Paul then voices the accusation’s conclusion: does that mean Christ becomes a “minister/servant of sin”? Paul’s response is immediate and emphatic: absolutely not.
The alternative explanation—who is really at fault Paul explains why the accusation fails. If “I build up again those things which I destroyed,” then “I prove myself a law-breaker.” The wrong is located in the person who reverses course—tearing something down and then reconstructing it—because that action displays inconsistency and self-incrimination. The point is that moral blame does not transfer to Christ; it lands on the one who rebuilds what they previously renounced.
Literary Context
These lines come in the middle of Paul’s argument after the confrontation with Cephas/Peter about shared meals and pressure to live like Jews (2:11–14). Paul has just stated that people are not “justified” by “works of the law” but through Christ (2:15–16). Verses 17–18 anticipate the pushback: if leaving boundary-marking practices makes Jews look like rule-breakers, does Paul’s approach make Christ promote wrongdoing? Paul’s reply keeps the logic moving: the problem is not Christ, but the act of reversing course and rebuilding the old system one had abandoned.
Historical Context
Galatians addresses mixed communities where non-Jews had joined groups shaped by Jewish Scriptures and customs. Some teachers were urging practices associated with Torah observance as necessary for full belonging, creating social strain around meals and identity. Paul writes in the early Roman Empire, when local assemblies had to navigate both Jewish communal expectations and wider Greco-Roman social pressures. In this setting, accusations of lax morals could easily be leveled against groups that relaxed traditional markers, so Paul directly tackles the claim that his stance makes moral disorder inevitable.
Theological Significance
Paul raises an objection to his message and rejects it. The objection runs like this: “If we seek to be justified in Christ, and that results in us being ‘found’ as sinners, then Christ must be promoting sin.” Paul’s explicit answer is a strong no.
