Pharaoh’s confrontation and reversal Pharaoh calls Abram in and accuses him of wrongdoing against Pharaoh personally: “What is this that you have done to me?” He presses Abram with repeated “why” questions, focusing on Abram’s failure to disclose that Sarai was his wife. Pharaoh also recounts the practical result of Abram’s statement: it led Pharaoh to take Sarai to be his wife. Pharaoh then commands Abram to look—“see your wife”—take her, and leave.

Literary Context
This passage concludes the Egypt episode that begins with Abram going down to Egypt because of famine and presenting Sarai as his sister (Genesis 12:10–16). The story moves from Abram’s strategy for survival, to Sarai being taken into Pharaoh’s household, to Abram receiving benefits, and then to a sudden reversal when plagues fall. The logic of the narrative is tight: deception leads to danger for Sarai and unintended harm for Pharaoh, then public confrontation leads to separation. It also prepares for the next section by sending Abram back out with Sarai and his goods intact.
Historical Context
The setting assumes a world where powerful rulers could take a woman into their household and where outsiders could gain protection and material benefit through court connections. Households functioned as political and economic centers, so trouble in “Pharaoh’s house” meant more than private illness. Marital status and family ties were essential social facts; misleading them could expose a ruler to public embarrassment and disrupt alliances. The text also reflects travel patterns between Canaan and Egypt during hardship, with Egypt viewed as a place of refuge during famine.
Theological Significance
Genesis 12:17–20 presents a sharp reversal: Abram’s attempt to protect himself by calling Sarai his “sister” ends with Pharaoh’s household struck by “great plagues,” Pharaoh confronting Abram, and Abram being sent away. The wording (“I took her to be my wife”) supports a real taking, but the story does not describe what happened inside the household.
There is also some difference in how people understand “because of Sarai.” Many take it as a direct cause: God strikes Pharaoh’s household to protect Sarai and to expose the situation. Others stress that the phrase points to Sarai as the occasion for the plagues (her presence and misidentified status), without giving details about the mechanism or timing.
A smaller question concerns verse 20: “they brought him on the way.” Some read this mainly as expulsion under guard; others see both expulsion and protection (an official escort ensuring departure without further conflict).
The narrative is selective. It states the reason for the plagues but not their medical or social form, how Pharaoh learned the truth, or what exactly occurred between Sarai and Pharaoh’s household. Because those details are unstated, interpreters infer the most likely scenario from the verbs (“took”), the public confrontation, and the final escort.
Explicitly, the passage portrays Yahweh acting against a powerful ruler’s household when Sarai—Abram’s wife—is wrongly taken, and it portrays Pharaoh recognizing that Abram’s deception put Pharaoh in the wrong position. The confrontation scene assigns moral weight to truth-telling about marriage and family ties, and it shows a foreign ruler demanding correction. The ending underscores separation: Abram leaves Egypt with Sarai and “all that he had,” but under Pharaoh’s direction and supervision.
