Question 1

What does verse 17 say is the reason the plagues came on Pharaoh’s household?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 gives an unusually direct explanation: Yahweh plagued Pharaoh and his house “because of Sarai,” and the verse immediately clarifies why Sarai matters—she is “Abram’s wife.” The text’s logic is that Pharaoh’s household is suffering due to an action taken toward someone who is not free to be taken as Pharaoh’s wife. The passage does not explain the physical nature of the plagues or the exact sequence of events, but it does not leave the moral reason vague. The narrator ties the crisis to Sarai’s true marital status, not to random misfortune.

Question 2

How do Pharaoh’s questions in verses 18–19 frame Abram’s responsibility?

Accepted Answer

Pharaoh’s questions emphasize that Abram’s words created the situation. He asks what Abram has done “to me,” then repeats “why” questions that focus on Abram’s failure to disclose Sarai’s true status (“Why didn’t you tell me…?”). Pharaoh also highlights the specific misleading claim: “Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife?” That last line frames Abram’s statement as the cause that led Pharaoh to act. The confrontation treats the deception as an offense with real consequences for Pharaoh, not just a private family matter.

Question 3

According to verses 18–19, what did Pharaoh believe Abram withheld, and what result followed?

Accepted Answer

Pharaoh says Abram withheld the fact that Sarai was his wife. He contrasts what Abram said (“She is my sister”) with what Abram should have said (that she was married to him). Pharaoh then explains the practical result: because of Abram’s claim, Pharaoh “took” Sarai “to be my wife.” The passage does not describe the details of that taking, but it does present Pharaoh as acting on the assumption that Sarai was eligible to enter his household. Pharaoh’s speech makes the causal chain clear: misleading words led to a wrongful taking, which led to crisis and reversal.

Question 4

What does Pharaoh command Abram to do in verse 19, and how does this resolve the immediate problem?

Accepted Answer

Pharaoh commands Abram to reclaim Sarai and leave: “See your wife, take her, and go your way.” The wording “your wife” publicly reasserts Sarai’s true identity and reverses Pharaoh’s earlier action of taking her. It is a direct undoing of the situation described in the previous line (“I took her to be my wife”). The command resolves the immediate problem by removing Sarai from Pharaoh’s household and ending the circumstances that verse 17 said brought plagues on Pharaoh’s house. The passage presents departure, not negotiation, as the solution.

Question 5

How does verse 20 describe Abram’s departure, and what details show its scope?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 describes an official, supervised departure. Pharaoh “gave men charge concerning him,” and they “brought him on the way,” meaning they escorted him out. The scope is explicit: Abram leaves with “his wife” and with “all that he had.” That last phrase shows Abram does not leave empty-handed or stripped of possessions, despite the conflict. The escort can be read as expulsion, protection, or both, but the verse clearly communicates Pharaoh’s control of the exit process and the completeness of Abram’s removal from the land.

Question 6

What does the passage communicate about Yahweh, Pharaoh, and power in this scene?

Accepted Answer

The text depicts Yahweh as able to strike a royal household directly, even in a foreign land and against a powerful ruler. Pharaoh is portrayed as reactive: he experiences harm, investigates (at least enough to confront Abram), and then acts to fix the problem by returning Sarai and sending Abram away. The power dynamic is therefore complex: Pharaoh has social and political power to take and to expel, yet Yahweh’s action disrupts Pharaoh’s household and forces a correction. The passage does not show Abram controlling events; instead, Abram is confronted and then escorted out under Pharaoh’s authority.
