Five kings mobilize against four The kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (also called Zoar) march out and line up for battle in the valley of Siddim. The opposing side is a four-king coalition led in the list by Chedorlaomer of Elam, with Tidal of Goiim, Amraphel of Shinar, and Arioch of Ellasar. The narrator summarizes the matchup as “four kings against the five,” highlighting the alliance structure rather than battle details.
The battlefield turns into a route The valley of Siddim is described as full of tar pits. When the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah flee, people “fell there,” and others escape to the hill country. The description explains why the retreat is costly and disorganized: the terrain itself becomes dangerous as the losing side runs.
Plunder and a personal loss After the victory, the invaders take “all the goods” and “all their victuals” from Sodom and Gomorrah and leave. Among the captured is Lot, identified as Abram’s nephew, who was living in Sodom; his goods are taken as well. The outcome connects the international conflict directly to Abram’s family.
Literary Context
This episode sits inside the larger war report of Genesis 14, which first lists the rival kings and describes prior years of control and rebellion (vv. 1–7). Verses 8–12 move from the buildup to the clash itself and its immediate outcome: defeat, flight, and plunder. The narrative’s focus tightens from regional politics to the personal problem that will drive the next scene—Lot’s capture. That link prepares for Abram’s later response (vv. 13–16) and the meeting with other figures afterward (vv. 17–24).
Historical Context
The passage reflects an ancient Near Eastern setting where cities often functioned as small states led by a “king” with local forces and alliances. Coalitions could form quickly for defense or conquest, and raids commonly targeted stores of food and movable wealth. The “vale of Siddim” is portrayed as an area with natural bitumen (tar) pits, a resource and hazard known in the broader region. The named places (Sodom, Gomorrah, Zoar, and others) suggest a clustered landscape of neighboring towns vulnerable to larger military campaigns.

The terrain matters: Siddim is described as full of tar/bitumen pits, and the retreat becomes chaotic and costly. After the defeat, the invaders take movable wealth and food supplies from Sodom and Gomorrah.
A key narrative outcome is personal, not just political: Lot (identified as Abram’s nephew) is seized along with his possessions because he is living in Sodom. That capture becomes the immediate bridge to what happens next in the chapter.
Two details are debated in a limited way:
What “they fell there” means (v.10). Some readers take it to mean people (or the kings) fell into the tar pits during flight. Others read it more generally as “they fell” in defeat—killed, wounded, or otherwise brought down in the rout—with the tar pits explaining the danger of the area without requiring that the pits were the direct cause.
Who “they” refers to (v.10). It could refer specifically to the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah, to their forces, or to both as a collective group caught in the retreat.
The sentence is brief and uses pronouns without re-naming the subject, so the “they” can attach to more than one nearby group. Also, the mention of tar pits invites a concrete picture (falling into pits), but the wording can also support a broader description of a military collapse.
The text shows how fragile these city-state alliances were and how quickly a battle could become a disaster, especially in difficult terrain. It also frames war in terms of its human fallout: plunder, loss of provisions, and the capture of noncombatants. Most importantly for Genesis 14, it explains why Abram becomes involved at all—Lot is carried off because he is embedded in Sodom’s life and fortunes (Genesis 14:12).
