Fire and sulfur, and a total overthrow The account states that Yahweh causes sulfur and fire to rain down from the sky onto Sodom and Gomorrah. The result is an “overthrow” that sweeps broadly: the cities themselves, the whole plain, everyone living in the cities, and even what grows from the ground.
Lot’s wife looks back While Lot is fleeing, his wife looks back from behind him. The text presents an immediate consequence: she becomes a pillar of salt.
Abraham sees the aftermath The story shifts to Abraham, who rises early and goes to the place where he had previously stood before Yahweh. From there he looks toward Sodom, Gomorrah, and the whole plain and sees smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.
Literary Context
This scene completes the Sodom episode that began with the visitors’ arrival and Lot’s urgent flight. It follows earlier bargaining where Abraham pleaded for the cities if even a small number of righteous people could be found, and it follows the messengers’ warning to flee without delay. Here the story resolves two threads at once: the announced overthrow happens in full, and the promised deliverance of Lot is carried out. The narrative also returns briefly to Abraham to confirm he is watching the outcome of what he had discussed earlier.
Historical Context
Genesis places these events in the patriarchal world of the ancient Near East, where people lived among small city-states, fertile valleys, and pasturelands. “Sodom and Gomorrah” are portrayed as established urban centers in a well-watered region called “the plain,” with agriculture that can be ruined along with human settlements. The language of catastrophic fire and sulfur fits how ancient texts described sudden, landscape-altering disasters. The focus, however, is not on reconstructing a specific geological event but on portraying a decisive collapse of these cities and their surrounding region.
Theological Significance
Genesis 19:24–29 presents a sudden, total disaster on Sodom, Gomorrah, and the surrounding plain. The text states that is the actor: sulfur and fire fall “out of the sky,” and the “overthrow” is described as comprehensive—cities, people, and even vegetation are swept away.

1) “Yahweh rained…from Yahweh” (v. 24). Some readers take the wording as emphasizing God’s direct personal action in judgment, with repetition for intensity. Others think it may hint at a more complex way the story speaks about God’s action (without describing the mechanics), but they still treat the point as: the disaster is attributed to Yahweh.
2) “Pillar of salt” (v. 26). Some understand this as a literal transformation as part of the judgment. Others think it could describe her death in a way that evokes a salt formation or a memorial-like image. Either way, the narrative treats the result as immediate and irreversible.
3) “God remembered Abraham” (v. 29). Some read this as meaning Lot is spared mainly because of Abraham’s relationship with God. Others stress that “remembered” points to God acting consistently with earlier promises and appeals—God keeps track of commitments and acts on them—without implying Abraham is the sole “cause.”
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses compact, high-impact wording. It gives clear theological attribution (“Yahweh did it”) while leaving many details unstated (how the disaster happened, what exactly the “pillar of salt” looked like, and the precise connection between Abraham’s plea and Lot’s rescue). Those gaps invite different reconstructions, while the core storyline remains stable.
What this passage clearly contributes The text portrays decisive judgment on entrenched wickedness and a rescue that occurs inside that judgment. It ties the rescue to God’s ongoing relationship with Abraham (“remembered Abraham”), linking this event back to the earlier conversation about Sodom. It also reinforces the urgency of the escape narrative by showing that turning back results in loss (Lot’s wife), while God’s deliverance of Lot is stated as purposeful and successful.
