Historical Context
The picture assumes a world where farming is normal and socially important: rainfall, soil moisture, and human labor are the basic ingredients for “plants of the field” to appear and thrive. The text speaks in everyday earth terms—dust, ground, breath, watering—rather than abstract theory. In the wider ancient Near Eastern environment, peoples told origin stories that explained why humans exist and what their place is in the working world; Genesis 2 speaks in that shared cultural space while using Israel’s covenant name for God. The scene also reflects a land-based imagination where cultivation is a defining human activity.

The man is formed and then animated Verse 7 narrates the making of the man: Yahweh God forms him from the dust of the ground. Then God breathes “the breath of life” into the man’s nostrils, and the result is that the man becomes a living being (often rendered “living soul”).
Genesis 2:4–7 narrows from the wide “heavens and earth” language to a close-up of land conditions and the start of human life. The text presents Yahweh God as the maker, and then describes a time when “plants of the field” have not yet appeared. Two reasons are stated: there has been no rain, and there is no man to work the ground. Yet water is still present, rising from the earth and wetting the ground’s surface. Into that setting, Yahweh God forms the man from ground-dust and gives life by breathing into him, resulting in a living being.
A major emphasis is the tight link between “man” and “ground”: the human is shaped from the soil he will later work. Life is pictured as God-given, not self-generated.
What kind of “plants” are missing in verse 5. Some read “plant/herb of the field” as meaning cultivated crops (things that normally require rain and human farming). Others read it more broadly as vegetation in general. The passage itself explains the absence by lack of rain and lack of a worker, which fits naturally with an agriculture-focused reading, but the wording can be taken more generally.
What the “mist” in verse 6 is. Some take it as a fog-like mist or heavy ground moisture that rises and wets the soil. Others think it describes water coming up from the earth like springs or flooding. Either way, the main point is that the ground is being watered without rainfall.
What “living soul/living being” stresses in verse 7. Some hear “living soul” as highlighting personhood in a special way. Others take it as a standard way of saying the man became a living creature. The verse is explicit that God’s breath is what makes the formed body alive; it is less explicit about how to map that language onto later philosophical categories.
Why the disagreement exists The pressure points come from translation choices and from how readers connect Genesis 2 to Genesis 1. Phrases like “in the day” can signal a general time period rather than a strict 24-hour day, and terms like “plants of the field” can be heard either narrowly (farm plants) or broadly (all plants). Likewise, the word translated “mist” does not specify the exact mechanism in a modern scientific way.
