Some read it mainly as a big-picture claim about worldwide benefit flowing through Isaac’s line; others stress its immediate function in the story: Yahweh is reaffirming the promise to Isaac as the covenant line continues, without detailing how the blessing reaches the nations.
Whether “she is my sister” is partial truth or deception. Some argue Isaac’s statement could be “technically true” in some sense and so less blameworthy; others read it as a deliberate misleading claim, since the men asked about his wife and the narrator highlights fear as the driver.
Why the disagreement exists The passage is brief and assumes earlier Genesis scenes in the background. It repeats phrases used in prior promise speeches and earlier “sister” episodes, but it does not pause to clarify details modern readers want (for example, whether Abimelech is one person across decades, the exact borders of “lands,” or the exact family relationship implied by “sister”). That leaves room for different reconstructions that still fit the stated facts.
What this passage clearly contributes This scene ties Isaac’s life to the larger promise storyline: the covenant promises do not end with Abraham but are reaffirmed to Isaac during a real threat (famine).
