Genesis 28:1–5 presents Isaac acting as family head: he calls Jacob, blesses him, and gives him a command. The command is specific—Jacob is not to marry a Canaanite woman, but to travel to Paddan-aram and marry within Rebekah’s extended family (Bethuel’s household, specifically Laban’s daughters). The narrator then confirms Jacob’s departure and repeats the family connections, keeping the focus on kinship lines and continuity.

The blessing Isaac speaks is also specific. He appeals to God Almighty to make Jacob fruitful and multiplied, and he links Jacob’s future to “the blessing of Abraham”: offspring and the land God promised to Abraham. In the story’s flow, these words publicly aim the Abraham-to-Isaac promises toward Jacob as Jacob leaves Canaan (compare Genesis 12:1–3).

Where interpretation differs

Some questions remain about scope and timing:

• “The blessing of Abraham”: Some read this as Isaac explicitly passing on the same covenant promises given to Abraham; others read it as Isaac asking for a renewed share of Abraham’s blessing—real continuity, but expressed as a fresh bestowal for Jacob’s next stage.
• “A company of peoples”: Some take this to mean the later formation of multiple tribes/nations connected to Jacob; others hear it more simply as growth into a large, extended people-group.
• “Inherit the land where you travel”: Some emphasize future possession (Jacob’s descendants eventually holding the land); others think the wording also includes Jacob’s present status as a resident outsider—he “travels” there now, while the gift is anchored in God’s prior grant to Abraham.
• “Isaac sent Jacob away”: Some stress the voluntary, purposeful mission for marriage; others hear an implied protective relocation in light of earlier family conflict, even though this unit itself foregrounds marriage and blessing.

Why the disagreement exists The wording is brief and layered. Key phrases (“blessing of Abraham,” “company of peoples,” “inherit,” “travel”) can legitimately be read with a narrower, immediate sense or a broader, long-range sense. Also, the passage sits in a tense family storyline; interpreters weigh differently how much of that tension is assumed in this scene versus how much the scene stands on its own as a formal commissioning.

What this passage clearly contributes

• It formally identifies Jacob as the heir in view: Isaac blesses him and asks God to extend Abraham’s blessing to Jacob and his offspring.
• It ties marriage choice to covenant continuity in the narrative: Jacob is directed away from local Canaanite matches and toward his mother’s kin.
• It keeps the promise themes together—offspring, peoplehood, and land—and grounds them in God’s prior gift to Abraham.
