Accusations and a changed face Jacob becomes aware of growing resentment. Laban’s sons claim Jacob’s wealth came from what belonged to their father, implying unfair gain. Jacob also observes Laban’s demeanor and concludes it is no longer friendly or supportive like it used to be.
A command to return with a promise Yahweh speaks directly to Jacob, telling him to return to the land connected to his ancestors and to his wider family. The instruction is paired with assurance: Yahweh will be with him as he goes.
Jacob briefs Rachel and Leah Jacob calls Rachel and Leah out to the field near his flock, a more private setting than Laban’s household. He states his perception that their father’s attitude has turned against him, but he frames his experience as protected by “the God of my father.” He appeals to their knowledge of his hard work and claims Laban repeatedly deceived him by changing his wages “ten times,” yet Jacob says God prevented Laban from harming him.
Literary Context
This passage follows the long account of Jacob’s growing herds and wealth while working for Laban, including the rising sense of rivalry and suspicion in the household. The story now pivots from “how Jacob prospered” to “how Jacob gets out,” moving the plot toward departure and confrontation. The narrative first reports outside pressure (what others say, what Jacob sees), then introduces a divine directive, and then shifts to Jacob’s careful communication with his wives. What begins here sets up the later flight, pursuit, and tense negotiation that will complete the episode.
Historical Context
The setting is a kin-based pastoral economy in the ancient Near East, where wealth is largely measured in livestock and labor arrangements can be renegotiated by the head of a household. A son-in-law working for a father-in-law sits in a vulnerable position: he depends on the family’s goodwill but can become a threat if he grows too strong. Family honor and inheritance expectations also shape conflict, so accusations about “taking” the father’s goods quickly become serious. In such a world, relocating with one’s household is not just travel but a high-stakes break in social and economic ties.
Theological Significance
Genesis 31:1–7 presents a turning point: Jacob’s success has produced open suspicion inside Laban’s household. The text first reports what Jacob (the sons’ accusation) and what he (Laban’s changed expression), then adds what Jacob from Yahweh (a command to return and a promise of presence), and finally what Jacob to Rachel and Leah (his rationale for leaving). These are explicit narrative moves, not just implied motives.

The passage also connects Jacob’s movement back to the earlier family promises by using “the land of your fathers” and “your relatives.” Yahweh’s “I will be with you” echoes a recurring theme in Genesis: divine presence is portrayed as decisive protection in risky transitions (Genesis 28:15).
Two issues carry real ambiguity.
Did Jacob “take away” Laban’s wealth by wrongdoing or by legitimate gain? Laban’s sons interpret Jacob’s wealth as taken from their father. Jacob, however, frames the situation as Laban’s repeated wage manipulation and God’s protection from harm. The text reports both perspectives but does not, in vv. 1–7, directly rule on the sons’ charge.
Is “ten times” a literal count or a rounded way to say “again and again”? Jacob’s claim that Laban changed his wages “ten times” can be read as an exact number or as an emphatic figure meaning repeated abuse. Either way, the point in context is persistent instability and exploitation.
The narrator gives accusation (sons), observation (Jacob about Laban’s face), and self-report (Jacob about wages and protection), but does not insert an explicit judgment sentence in this unit. Also, the phrase “ten times” is naturally capable of functioning either precisely or idiomatically.
